Disturbed are back and 'Immortalized' will be right up there amongst my most played releases of 2015.

Following the 'Taste Of Chaos' tour at the end of 2010, Disturbed decided a break was needed and the band was put on an indefinite hiatus. I caught one of the shows on that tour and it seemed as though everyone was going through the motions. Singer David Draiman moved on to record the Device album (a slightly more Industrialised version of Disturbed), drummer Mike Wengren and guitarist Dan Donegan formed Fight Or Flight (Traditional Rock) and recently bassist John Moyer has been involved in Geoff Tate's Operation Mindcrime project. Five years since the release of the rather lacklustre 'Asylum' it is time for studio album number six and what a return to form it is.

After such a long absence I was not expecting to hear Draiman, Donegan and Wengren (Moyer was not involved in the creation and recording process) sound so rejuvenated. Some credit must also be given to producer Kevin Churko (Five Finger Death Punch, In This Moment and more recently Papa Roach) because he has introduced his own touches to enhance the signature Disturbed sound. In fact the sound on 'Immortalized' has a significant vibrancy and is huge.

The title-track (following a brief instrumental intro) is a chest-beating powerhouse of an opener. The drums and guitars are fully "in your face" before Draiman's unmistakable vocals cut in. Each song is attacked with a passion and enthusiasm that was missing from 'Asylum' and the perfect blend of aggression and melody has great balance and an immediate impact. This is hard-edged Rock music at its finest and though many Fireworks readers will avoid this release because they associate the name Disturbed with music of a more inaccessible nature, they should at least give it a chance.

'The Light' is bordering on Melodic Rock whilst the riffs that form the basis of 'Who' and 'Save Our Last Goodbye' would leave the likes of Primal Fear and Judas Priest nodding their heads in admiration. Donegan's solos are imaginative without being overly self-indulgent and Wengren's drums are the immovable backbone of the sound throughout. The biggest surprise is the cover of 'The Sound Of Silence'; the sweeping orchestral arrangements are almost epic in scope and allow Draiman to overlay an impassioned vocal. The deluxe edition contains sixteen tracks and initially I thought my interest levels would begin to wain towards the end of the seventy minute running time. In fact I just simply hit repeat.

Disturbed are back and 'Immortalized' will be right up there amongst my most played releases of 2015 and there is still FFDP and Shinedown to come. Roll on the tour to follow in 2016.....see you down the front (probably not).
