Melodic Rock with a few Gothic touches.

Haunted By Destiny were formed in Norrkoping, Sweden by drummer Christian Gardefuhr and guitarist Johan Soderhielmhas. Stage performer Evelina Eliasson joined and immediately became involved in the writing of material and recording of demos. The band line-up was completed by bass player Marcus K Johansson and second guitarist Simon Weston and a four track EP, entitled 'Aria', was released back in November. 'Aria For An Angel' is the debut full-length album and contains the original four songs from the EP alongside eight new songs.

I was fully expecting another Female-Fronted Symphonic Metal project so was pleasantly surprised to discover that the HBD style is Melodic Rock with a few Gothic touches. Opener 'Healthy Girl' is a furious mix of riffs, keyboards and stop/start staccato drums. The song has great energy and the spirited performances reveals some quality musicianship. 'Turning Pages' has a strong melodic vibe and the hook is immediate and addictive. Eliasson's singing takes on a more relaxed feel but she still manages to convey plenty of emotion and a forceful attitude.

From then on the songs seem to alternate between Gothic and Melodic Rock and Eliasson is extremely comfortable whatever the style. The urgency of 'Freakshow' sounds like Paramore whilst 'Gravity' mixes quirky Pop with AOR-influenced passages that bring Dante Fox to mind. 'The Road' contains some orchestral and choral enhancements that adds another facet to the sound and though 'Follow' is one of the heavier tracks on 'Aria', the power and melody are well balanced. All the songs have brief running times (less than four minutes) meaning that the impact is instant and it really is difficult to pick out favourites.

HBD will appeal to those who like AOR, Melodic Rock or the sound Within Temptation have moved towards on their last couple of albums. The band's style has a traditional base but has been given a fresh twist and the material has acted as a nice alternative to the more incendiary offerings that have come my way during the course of this issue*.
