Recommended to all Metal aficionados, not only those particularly keen on historic themes.

Much as we love Metal, it has to be admitted that lyrical clichés appear within the realms of the genre way too often. No matter if we're talking fantasy-themed tales of dragons and castles or joie de vivre of a leather-clad bikers, sometimes these themes are utilized to the point of annoyance.

Another such cliché is history, military and Medieval history in particular with the likes of Sabaton coming to mind almost immediately. However, there's still place for interesting lyrical concepts in the world of Metal. Take the German act Rebellion, who's already dealt with plethora of different topics on their albums – from Shakespearian literature to Viking history. Now they're back with their seventh full-length 'Wyrd Bið Ful Aræd – The History Of The Saxons' released via Massacre.
As befits for the masters in the art of making concept albums, there's also a certain cinematic dimension to Rebellion's newest effort. Its evocativeness is enhanced even more by different forms of expression borrowed from literary or cinematographic tradition (such as the dialogue intro that precedes 'God Of Mercy').

Evocative, picturesque and atmospheric in its lyrical layer, the album is a bloody, dark story of evolving society, its pride and tradition, its conquest and subjection under the foreign rule. The band's singer Michael Seifert tells the aforesaid story in his raw, throaty singing manner, his vocal expressiveness unrestrained. Music-wise, there couldn't have possibly been a better complement to it than Rebellion's trademark sound. From the panache of the opening track 'Irminsul' to the furious guitar-driven gallop of 'Sahsnotas' or 'Blood Court' and a tad of melody in 'Hengist' or 'Runes Of Victory', it's majestic, heavy and muscular Power Metal at its very best.

Rebellion remains less known than the military history-obsessed Sabaton and also somewhat in the shadow of its founding members' previous band Grave Digger; in both cases – undeservedly. From their Shakespearian inspirations to explorations of Viking history, this Teutonic five-piece blend interesting album ideas with epic and evocative musical background. The group's new album is thus no different from the solid recordings of their past – their alleged "furor teutonicus" contributing to it as much as their great musicianship.

Recommended to all Metal aficionados, not only those particularly keen on historic themes.
