An album's worth of goodies for you to look forward to.

Retro seems to be the new watchword, with many an album being released these days, filled with that "old fashioned" Rock 'n' Roll attitude that bands had back in the 1970s. The Night Flight Orchestra, Blues Pills, Orchid and Year Of The Goat all have that retro vibe going on in various guises and joining this happy throng with their third album are Swedish Rockers Imperial State Electric.

The band's mantra was to create an album that had the same outlook, heart and soul that their heroes The Beatles, Otis Redding, Alice Cooper, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols had on them as they grew up. Music that made your blood pressure rise, made you want to dance and above all music that made you feel joyful. ISE, made up of members of The Hellacopters, Entombed, Death Breath & The Solution, The Datsuns and Captain Murphy, have for the most part made an album that does just that.

Kicking things off with the KISS-inspired 'Let Me Throw My Life Away' is a bold move for the band and from this great start the Rock 'n' Roll just keeps on coming. 'Anywhere Loud', the Punky 'Guard Down' and the Country Rock of 'All Over My Head' are all beautifully constructed songs with strong melodies and hooks and they really do start the album off in fine style.

Then, once the band have got themselves in a comfortable position, they continue to play great song after great song. 'Walk On By' is something I could hear the late great Roy Orbison singing whilst 'Another Armageddon' could fit on the new YOTG album and not feel out of place. The best song by a country mile though is the (early period) Blue Oyster Cult-inspired 'Colder Down Here'. It's beguiling and haunting guitar refrain and chorus are joined with the retro Rock this band are brilliant at, and from this musical bedrock the band build to a potent and thoroughly entertaining crescendo.

ISE haven't tried to reinvent the wheel on 'Honk Machine' and you have probably come across this kind of album before, but in the end it's all about the songs and Imperial State Electric have an album's worth of goodies for you to look forward to.
