A strong album that proves there is still plenty left in Dave Gilmour's armoury.

The first "new" recording from any part of the Pink Floyd monster since 2006 was always going to create interest. PF themselves ended up releasing an album only once every green ("dark"?) moon, so waiting is a normal state for Floyd/David Gilmour fans. Ultimately, the question with each release is "was it worth the wait"?

The first thing I noted after hearing this for the first time was that, as far as I can remember, this album had a bigger, immediate impact on me than 'On An Island'. Co-written mostly with his partner Polly Samson, the ten tracks cover a wide variety of moods and textures, most of which rest easily on the ears. There are definite strengths and weaknesses.

'The Girl In The Yellow Dress' is a puzzlement to me, as it is, essentially, 1940's Lounge/Bar Jazz, which is so out of place with the other tracks. That aside, things get a bit better. '5 A.M.' reminds me of Floyd openers, with a nice guitar line as a taster of what is to follow. The title track is medium-tempo with a catchy bass line, reminding me a little of 'One Slip', while sounding nothing like it, if that makes sense. However, the chorus is quite disappointing lyrically.

'A Boat Lies Waiting' could have been an opener, slow and relaxed with vocal harmonies over a simple repeated piano line, while 'Beauty' features a guitar sound that reminds me of 'One Of These Days.' 'Today' has a really nice choral start that quickly shifts away and moves to something unexpected that's not too far away from Peter Gabriel. And then 'And Then...' is a really nice, gentle instrumental that wouldn't sound out of place on a Shadows/Hank Marvin album.

Which leaves my two favourites, 'Faces Of Stone' and 'In Any Tongue.' The former is a little odd due to the fact that it reminds me of an old Camel track; there is a strong French sound at the beginning, but the whole song is carried on a very simple fifteen or sixteen note piano line, demonstrating expertly that you don't have to get complicated to sound brilliant. One thing that this track does have though, that I've never heard on a Floyd or Gilmour album before; a mis-hit string in the middle of a lead line. '...Tongue' is the albums 'Comfortably Numb'. The whole song is very melodic, with a very strong chorus that stays with you forever, and there is a tendency to hit the replay button once it has finished.

This is a strong album that proves there is still plenty left in Dave Gilmour's armoury, and anyone who liked anything Floyd will love this.
