It doesn't have its own sparkle or attitude and that's something every album needs to have.

'Drowning' is the second album from Swiss Rock band, Insomnia Rain. After the 'Black Dog' album (2012), guitarist Peter Brehm left the band and Sarah Mark joined as the new guitarist, making IR one of few Rock bands to have not just one female member, but two.

Opening tracks 'Out Of The Skin I'm In' and 'Weapon Of Mass Destruction' are fairly flat and heavy. Dominic Silva's vocals seem oddly atonal, clashing with the almost melancholic tone of the music. The higher register is definitely something he should stay away from.

'Now And Then' is the first track I really feel something for. It's more melodic than the two prior tracks but that still isn't saying much. You can hear influences of Stone Sour and Alter Bridge around the song-writing but IR doesn't have the catchiness of the former, or the mysterious thoughtfulness of the latter.

'Kill All My Friends' brings some much-needed energy and rhythm, even if it isn't very tight and a little thin. The overall effect is messy and demo-like. 'Take Me Away' is a better offering with a Pop Punk quality though again, the vocals seem to be singing a different song. The guitar work of Mark and Marijke Martens makes some nice inroads to the music here with fills and short but sweet solos. More of this variety would go down a treat.

I'm not usually keen on electronic effects but 'Always In My Heart' actually uses them very well. Bordering on similarities with Funk band Jamiroquai, this bouncy and light-hearted track underscores how Pop Punk is definitely the strongest sound for Insomnia Rain. Silva's vocals also work brilliantly in the more conversational, chatty rhythm of Rock Funk. 'Wasted' has a heavier touch to it, more akin to Avenged Sevenfold than AB but again, it's a passing touch which doesn't really do much to shape the song.

What I really feel this album lacks is polish and personality; it doesn't have its own sparkle or attitude and that's something every album needs to have.
