Top quality Modern Metal from a band that represents the future of the genre.

Dare we cover a band like Trivium in our magazine & website? What would the purists say about a band that purveys Metal with growling screamed vocals?

Trivium has always been a band that I have admired; technically gifted and a band that perhaps in tandem with Avenged Sevenfold have redefined Metal in the modern era. Yet the vocal roar has always been an off putting feature to ears brought up on hooks and melodic choruses delivered by clean vocals.

Of course, if we go back to 2006 it can be noted that vocalist Matt Heafy did indeed change his vocal style on 'The Crusade', omitting the Metalcore style in favour of straight singing, albeit in a much maligned James Hetfield way. Fast forward to 2015 and Trivium – according to guitarist Corey Beaulieu – now have the skills, particularly vocally, to craft a Metal album that combines all the technicality of today's Modern genre with an appreciation of old-school Classic Metal. To that end, Trivium has surpassed themselves.

Heafy's singing is controlled, powerful and epic and when harnessed to Michael "Elvis" Baskette's production and Josh Wilbur's mix, songs like the title track are melodic yet still feature chunky riffs big enough to serve with gravy. Think prime time AS sprinkled with sizeable carnage from Europe's Power Metal elite and touches of Iron Maiden's dual guitar attack and that may whet your appetite.

From start to finish 'Silence In The Snow' does exactly what it sets out to achieve. From the frantic double kick bass drums of 'Breathe In The Flames', the twin guitar attack of 'The Thing That's Killing Me ' or 'Blind Leading The Blind', through to the Metallica-like 'Dead And Gone' and the Maiden harmony guitar parts of 'Pull Me From the Void', there's something here for any follower of Metal both Classic and Modern.

'Silence In the Snow' opens a new chapter in the history of Trivium; it's a brave move but I can't see that it will alienate diehard fans and it may just bring on board a few new ones. It's certainly an album that should pique the interest of those who enjoy top quality Modern Metal from a band that represents the future of the genre.
