Big, clever and sometimes too precocious for its own good, this is an album which defies labels.

Let's call this Prog Metal. Or Prog Metal with a hint of Neo-Classical. Yes, there you go. Hmmm, not happy about that definition, well that is understandable as there's so much more here. Vytautas Diškevičius has worked with Classical Music, Rock and even written a Eurovision entry – all that feeds into his labour of love debut 'Striving For The Skies' and it's a packed programme – sometimes too packed for its own good.
There are the banging, tight Prog Metal jabbing riffs and a bit of synth work, but there's also Spanish guitar, thin synth fanfares, Classically-influenced piano lines, Atari synths and musical theatre melodies.

As you can see, it's a heady brew and when it holds together, as it does on the opener 'Heaven Is Too Far', the results can be somewhat of a thrill-ride. If you've had your fill of anything, don't worry, something else will be along in a minute – see, a whole new section, oops... here comes a descending piano, very enjoya...hang on, here's pan pipe feeling, well, that's... whoa, just a minute, here's a guitar and synth duelling... let me just catch my breath...

Oddly, the eight tracks here are much more successful when they do dance around the main sound and throw in their own, although that's not to say that the chunky riffs and dense drums won't please a Prog Metal maven; 'Highway Ghost' not messing too much with the basics whilst closer 'Rise' is triumphant in its fanfare. For others, the jam-packed 'Let My Heart Go Down In Flames' has enough to satisfy even those internet savvy multi-taskers who, we are told by many in the mainstream press, have the attention span of a Paraguayan fruit fly; in fact, this track is approaching classy.

Big, clever and sometimes too precocious for its own good, this is an album which defies labels. It can take you to places you want to go or it can assault your senses to overload. 'Striving For The Sky'; sounds like it...
