Although not necessarily the first location you think when discussing places that have a rich and lengthy history in Heavy Metal music, Italy is bringing and delivering it to the masses in the form of My Refuge. In the five years since forming, this quintet have released two EPs and are now prepared to release their first full-length album with 'A Matter Of Supremacy'.

Surprisingly, the album does not comprise of all new material, as they have decided to mix new with old by combining six new tracks and four previously penned compositions. Since a bio on the band was not available, it is unclear as to whether the older material was simply culled from those previous sessions or was in fact re-recorded specifically for this album.

The music has all the earmarks consistent with the genre and each band member is very well versed on their respective instruments. Elements of Iron Maiden (harmonized guitars) and Helloween (fast-tempos) are prevalent throughout but the songs lack the character and memorable qualities that contemporaries have achieved. Although they do not stray into odd meters and shifting tempos, their unconventional song forms push MR into a more Progressive direction; albeit unique in certain eyes and ears as some may find themselves adjusting to Moz's vocal timbre.

His high tenor is strong and soaring yet also possesses a lamenting quality that brings to mind the melodramatic delivery of Robert Smith (The Cure). The majority of the songs feature melodies that keep Moz in a rather conservative pitch range but when required, he is able to confidently reach stratospheric pitches like on 'Endless Night' where his performance would make a young Geoff Tate blush.

Though My Refuge are quite studied, their brand of Power Metal is somewhat derivative for the genre and ultimately fails to set themselves apart from their peers. However, that is not to suggest that the album lacks personality. As a matter of fact, one of the strongest statements they make is on 'Somewhere', the album's concluding track.

Although not quite essential listening, fans of the style are encouraged to preview a few tracks and judge 'A Matter Of Supremacy' for themselves.
