The superb job done by Jon Astley on the re-master makes this one well worth buying again.

There's no doubting that Honeymoon Suite have their own distinct sound, based around bouncing rhythms, fluid guitar, clever keys and heartfelt vocals, but it's also true that the quintet from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls have never really made two consecutive albums in the same style. Their most successful period went from the unique, New Wave-influenced Pop Rock of their 1984 debut through the big Arena Rocker 'The Big Prize' to the sparser, guitar-based 'Racing After Midnight' in 1988.

By the dawn of the nineties things were changing for the band; they lost their long-time bassist Gary Lalonde and drummer Dave Betts and the support of the U.S. arm of their label. But the main song-writing team of guitarist Derry Grehan, singer Johnny Dee and returning keyboard player Ray Coburn hooked up with renowned engineer Paul Northfield to make the most varied and mature record of their career thus far.

'Monsters Under The Bed' – completed with the help of session bassist Steve Webster and drummer Jorn Anderson – is still a great sounding album that cherry-picked themes from their first trio of hit records (already re-issued beautifully by Rock Candy last year!) and added even more different elements to the mix.

There was a new-found earthiness to Grehan's guitar on the catchy single 'Say You Don't Know Me' and the gritty Rockers 'If Ya Love Me' and 'Next To You', as well as the downright uncomfortable 'Little Sister' with its dark child abuse/incest subject matter. The contemporary edge they'd always possessed was even sharper on 'Come (Let Me Take You There)', 'Miracle' and the Bon Jovi-ish 'It's Only Love', whilst Ray Coburn added some stunning touches to The Beatles pastiche 'The Road' and the expansive closer 'All I Wanted', as well as the nod towards their early days 'Bring On The Light'. Dee's instantly recognisable vocals bleed passion with some well-thought out lyrics – surely one of the most criminally ignored singers in any genre – and the record is awash with all those clever little arrangements and instrumental chops that make good songs into truly great ones.

'Monsters Under The Bed' perhaps suffered at the time from not being as immediate as the trio that preceded it, but if you put in a bit of listening time it's one of those albums that'll be with you for the long haul. There are no extras unfortunately, but the superb job done by Jon Astley on the re-master makes this one well worth buying again.
