Title

A contender for 'Album Of The Year' without a shadow of a doubt.

Perhaps one of the most eagerly awaited comebacks of the melodic rock world, the original line-up of Unruly Child split up before they got the chance to build on their immense debut album. It may be a different world out there these days and contracts and budgets may have at least two zeros less than they did in 1991, but as has been proven many times over the last fifteen years or so, you don’t need the big money to make a great album. Sensibly guitarist Bruce Gowdy, bassist Larry Antonino, drummer Jay Schellen, keyboard player Guy Allison and vocalist Marcie Free have used their self-titled album as a template and have created a logical follow-up that I’m sure most fans will be happy with.

The first thing to report is that Marcie Free is still one of the best singers out there and the years away from the spotlight have done nothing to dampen the range, power or potency of her voice. Of course that wouldn’t mean too much if they didn’t have a collection of excellent songs for her to wrap her considerable vocal cords around, so the wry smile that will probably spread around your face the first time you hear the dynamic opener ‘Show Me The Money’ with its big Bruce Gowdy guitar riffs, (so reminiscent of ‘On The Rise’ from the debut), will probably stay there for the whole twelve songs. There are others that are modelled on past glories, like the killer AOR tune ‘When We Were Young’, which has the same kind of catchy chorus and inventive Guy Allison keyboard fills as ‘Who Cries Now’, or the low-key ballad ‘Tell Another Lie’, over which you could probably sing the words to ‘To Be Your Everything’. However, don’t be fooled into thinking they’ve just re-hashed old ideas as there are plenty of other highlights throughout. ‘Insane’, for instance, is a busy Zeppelin-influenced rocker with Jay Schellen in full flow and plenty going on, whilst ‘Talk To Me’ is an acoustic ballad that just exudes songwriting expertise and the pompy title track has a perfect balance of guitars and keys and wonderful multi-tracked vocals.

‘Read My Mind’, ‘Very First Time’ and ‘Love Is Blind’ are all great commercial rock songs with a slightly modern edge, and the bombastic ‘Life Death’ is big classic rock with some interesting eastern melodies from Allison, who also shines on the stirring anthem ‘You Don’t Understand’ which ends the album in a mass of swirling synths. I’d go as far as to say that Guy Allison plays a bigger part in the sound of this album than anything he’s done since World Trade, but thankfully not at the cost of Bruce Gowdy’s classy and powerful guitar work.

To be honest I didn’t know what to expect from ‘Worlds Collide’ and thought that maybe too much water had gone under the bridge to expect any kind of chemistry to still exist. The great news here is that in a world where so many comeback albums have been disappointing, Unruly Child have delivered an album they can be rightfully proud of. A contender for Album Of The Year without a shadow of a doubt.
