An interesting debut which shows promise, however it lacks cohesion with too many instrumentals.

According to the press release, Circuline are a new Modern Prog Rock band. They have two vocalists (Billy Spillane and Natalie Brown) who have played in various bands and performed in theatre for the best part of a quarter of a century. Keyboardist Andrew Colyer, lead guitarist Bill Shannon and drummer Darin Brannon were formerly in Prog tribute band Downing Grey. The group is completed by bassist Paul Ranieri formerly of Shadow Eden whilst Matt Dorsey from Sound Of Contact guests and also mixed the album.

Title track 'Return' opens the album and features both vocalists, it is a mid-tempo number with some nice guitar work and some fine keyboards reminiscent of Yes. Second track 'Nebulae' is an instrumental with some nice keyboard touches and solid drumming yet is also has a somewhat Jazz fusion feel to it. 'Stereotypes' opens up sounding like Threshold and then transforms into a Mostly Autumn type number. There are also snippets of Camel and Rush and features some fine bass and an excellent extended guitar solo. The last fifteen seconds or so pay tribute to Rush's 'YYZ' and are much heavier than what has gone before.

'Soleil Noir' is another instrumental that begins like Rush's 'Red Barchetta' and then morphs into something that would have sat nicely on a mid-seventies Camel album featuring a Pete Bardens style keyboard/synthesiser solo. 'One Wish' is the longest track on the album clocking in at around seven minutes, once again it starts off sounding like MA with some nice vocals from Brown before a haunting piano section that then breaks into a monstrous Threshold heavy section again featuring great keyboards, lead guitar and bass.

'Imperfect' is a short instrumental with some fine lead guitar playing over a mellow piano and is followed by yet another instrumental which features some strange sounding fuzz/stun guitar and some intense drumming from Brannon. Final track 'Silence Revealed' once again starts off slowly and during a lengthy instrumental break sounds similar to It Bites and Porcupine Tree in parts.

So an interesting debut (the band are currently working on a follow-up but without Shannon who has recently left) which shows promise, however it lacks cohesion with too many instrumentals. I wouldn't agree with the blurb about modern...Circuline are definitely stuck in the 1970s and 1980s.
