Their most accessible body of work to date for the casual listener.

I remember hearing Clutch's self-titled sophomore album quite soon after its release in 1995 and I freely admit that I was very disappointed after reading so many positive reviews. I've dabbled occasionally since then, but it wasn't until 2013's 'Earth Rocker' that my interest levels piqued enough to actually buy another one of the band's albums. Twenty years ago my initial impressions about Clutch were that the songs seemed to be a loose collection of semi ideas jammed to a conclusion and that the Maryland four-piece lacked a creative direction. 'Psychic Warfare' builds on the momentum generated by '...Rocker's success and sees the trend towards a stronger commercial writing ethic continue.

It is unusual these days to find four guys who have remained together for so long and the fact there have been no line-up changes in the band since forming in 1991 is a clear indication of their dedication and determination. After a brief spoken intro, 'X-Ray Visions' gets things under way properly and it could be one of the strongest album openers yet, full of bravado and groove and topped off by lead singer Neil Fallon's unmistakable vocals and quirky yet imaginative lyrics.

Both 'Firebirds' and 'A Quick Death In Texas' have a Bluesy swagger dripping in Southern attitude and are best listened to with several shots of tequila. The short instrumental 'Doom Saloon' could have been lifted from Robert Rodriguez's 'Mariachi' trilogy and leads into the equally down 'n' dirty 'Our Lady Of Electric Light' which is both moody and reflective. Every track has merit and after half a dozen plays it is tough to pick out favourites.

Long-time producer Machine (Lamb Of God) lets the music do the talking and the forty minute running time sidesteps any pointless meandering passages and the main essence of each song becomes the most important factor. Eleven albums in and there is still something for the diehards to clutch (oh yes I did) on to, yet 'Psychic Warfare' is the most accessible body of work to date for the casual listener... and that includes myself.
