As a tribute of sorts to the glorious era of Heavy Metal (and a well-done job as well), it's not a record to be dismissed.

When discussing world-renowned Rock and Metal acts of the past, it's something that Greece wasn't especially recognised for; obviously, we could have mentioned a few but not many. But this status quo has now been challenged by recent era contemporary acts – from Melodic Rock representatives Outloud! and Reload to dozens of young Thrash and Classic Metal bands. Diviner, with their recently released debut 'Fallen Empires', can be added to that discussion.

The four minutes of bombastic, galloping guitar that constitutes the title track gives the album a powerful start. The tunes that follow, from 'Kingdom Come' to 'Riders From The East', mark no change of musical direction. It's mostly classic Heavy/Power Metal with just a slight contemporary touch to it. At this point into the album, you could have easily guessed what's been the daily music diet of this Hellenic quintet.

Their sound, largely determined by a twin lead guitar attack and grandiosity that is almost textbook (if there was any textbook of Heavy Metal, that is) for the genre, ooze with classic Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Accept – the Rob Halford-fronted ensemble in particular – with (obviously) some Dio as well.

Upon hearing tracks such as 'The Legend Goes On' or 'Come Into My Glory', especially vocal-wise, it should come as no surprise that Diviner's singer Yiannis Papanikolaou also sings in a Dio tribute band. There are certain vocal gimmicks he must have adopted while studying "the little man with the big voice" and his singing manner. Driven with furious shredding, 'Seven Gates' shows a more aggressive and raw dimension to the group's sound. That said, it would have been an exaggeration to call it a stylistic turn of any sorts.

However, tracks such as this or 'The Shadow And The Dark' certainly have Diviner abandoning their previous Power Metal-esque grandiosity in favour of something more straightforward. Not for long, though. The powerful choruses of the final offerings that are 'Sacred War' and 'Out In The Abyss' correspond with the album's opening tracks rather than its immediate predecessors.

You could say that 'Fallen Empires' is cliché-ridden and predictable; to some extent you wouldn't be wrong. It's hard to imagine this Greek five-piece had no idea we've already heard classic albums based on the epic lyrical tales and majestic, guitar-laden Metal anthems before. But if you look at it the other way – as a tribute of sorts to the glorious era of Heavy Metal (and a well-done job as well) – it's not a record to be dismissed.

Fans of the classic Priest, Maiden, Manowar – or to an extent Megadeth – know why and what kind of magic this music carries. Perhaps it's time for the rest of the world to learn it too.
