With her second solo outing, she bravely reveals a different side ... that of a loving mother.

Doubtless you'll know Candice Night as the beautiful, captivating voice of Blackmore's Night, however with her second solo outing, she bravely reveals a different side... that of a loving mother. The idea for 'Starlight Starbright' came to Night during her pregnancy with her first child Autumn, the singer wanting to express her love and emotions of being "part of this miracle". But it was the act of lulling her children to sleep and slowly waking them from their slumbers through her gentle, calming tones that really set the scene for this collection. That said, Night insists that it isn't a lullaby album, although even with some less obvious covers and original tracks, it's difficult to see it in any other light.

A lyrically re-arranged 'Rock A Bye Baby' introduces what is a selection of carefully crafted and beautifully performed songs, which manage to avoid being overly twee through the atmosphere of calm they provide. Yes, these may in places be "children's songs", but they aren't the anodyne clichés we heard performed when we were young.

A wonderful version of the John Denver hit 'Annie's Song' proves irresistible, the layers of voices and cajoling keyboards mesmerising. That said, the far more obviously "kiddie" 'Down In The Meadow' shows that if handled with love and care, even these moments can draw you in. Night's husband, a certain Ritchie Blackmore, provides the music for two original pieces, 'Sleep Little Baby' and 'Misty Blue'. Both fit in perfectly, while their daughter Autumn also receives a writing credit on 'Lullaby In The Night', a new song that Night discovered her daughter singing to her dolls and then helped adapt to what we now hear on this disc.

I can't pretend that 'Starlight Starbright' will be for everyone, or indeed that even those who do engage with it will listen to it often. However, if sparkling vocal performances and gently lulling music is something you can imagine sharing with your very young ones (and partaking in, in moments of isolated introspection), then there's no denying you'll find a soft spot for what Candice Night has created.
