Something the fans of late eighties Melodic Metal (with a bit of an added modern twist) might be into.

In the days when the history of Rock was still in the making, everything seemed fresh and new. Each band was bringing their own individual style and distinctiveness to the picture and there was no way you could say these or those two sounded alike. Now that it's much different, the new and upcoming acts struggle to find their own style even more desperately. Some succeed at it, but most of them – unable to reinvent the proverbial wheel – fail miserably. The album recently released by the Norwegian band Lucid Dreams – 'Build And Destroy' – is no failure in musical terms, but in other respects they're just the same old song and dance.

Probably the best, and simultaneously the worst, thing about '...Destroy' is that this release is everything you could have expected from a band of this ilk. An opener to start the album in an upbeat manner, 'Wings Of The Night', teeters on the brink of Hard Rock and eighties Heavy Metal. The eighties-tinted synth solo sounds slightly odd at first but after a few listens through the song, it slowly starts to creep into your brain and secure itself a place inside. The whole song is hardly memorable though, and perhaps it would have been better to have something catchier – 'Hellbound' or 'Fear No Evil' – as an opener instead of this selection. Still it's not exactly anything we haven't heard before – it is indeed just the other way around, a conglomerate of songs that are nice but predictable.

The only piece that one can really differentiate from the rest is 'Absence Of Innocence', a six-minute-long epic with sombre mood and soaring, wailing-turned-screaming vocals. A bit too Modern Rock for a traditionalist's liking – but nevertheless, an interesting one. The guitar solo within this track is pretty impressive too. On the positive note, songs such as title track or 'Shanghai Cyanide' when used as energy boosters would have probably done their job pretty well and perhaps even replace a morning shot of caffeine into your system.

'Build And Destroy' is not a bad album by any meanings and the musicianship within the band is more than decent. The only problem about the album is that there's been hundreds, if not thousands, similar to it before and it's hard to find something truly outstanding about it. Perhaps slightly different arrangements would have enhanced the quality of some songs, their individual flavour and tone more sharpened and distinctive – who knows...?

Overall, Lucid Dreams has done a nice job with their sophomore effort, something the fans of late eighties Melodic Metal (with a bit of an added modern twist) might be into.
