'Lightning Strikes Twice' is a definite slice of melodic rock at its best.

It’s already been 20 years since the Californian long blonde-haired twin brothers appeared in the scene to escalate the billboard charts and conquer our ears with their triple-platinum debut album ‘After The Rain’, and also the eyes of the female fans with their good looks. In 1995 their second album, ‘Because They Can’ on Geffen Records, as was their first, clashed with the ruling (and considerably loathed by many of us) grunge movement, and Matthew and Gunnar Nelson pretty much disappeared off the UK radar. The twins, however, have kept busy throughout all these years launching new albums for their own independent label, Stone Canyon Records, and now in 2010 a worldwide original release is finally available through the Italian Frontiers Records.

At the time of printing I had no information available as to the other members in the band but the work done on ‘Lightning Strikes Twice’ truly deserves praise, as leaders Matthew and Gunnar have done an excellent job. Uplifting tones, sizable choruses, catchy (not cheesy) melodies and enriching guitars are delivered with a fresh sound, as this is Nelson in 2010. As with their debut album, love-related lyrics prevail, yet there are also party rockers such as ‘Ready, Willing And Able’ and entertaining grin-producing words in ‘In It For The Money’. This latter song doesn’t seem to belong to the trademark Nelson song writing style, but fits really well on the album and also has that highly uplifting rhythm.

‘To Get Back To You’ is a powerful ballad that showcases that their voices still keep the strength they had two decades ago, whilst the mid-tempo ‘Take Me There’ is truly colossal in its structure and performance. Making comparisons, ‘How Can I Miss You’ starts with a similar mid-tempo guitar solo as UFO’s ‘Doctor Doctor’ but then somehow progresses into a kind of Latin bit, making it the most commercial track on the album. On the other side of the spectrum ‘You’re All I Need’ is a clear example of the nicely layered accomplished guitar solos throughout the twelve tracks on this CD, and the opener ‘Call Me‘ sets the tone that Nelson has never stopped being a melodic hard rock band.

With their debut album not only did Nelson achieved triple platinum status, but also inscribed the Nelson family in the Guinness Book of Records as the only family to produce number one hits in three consecutive generations. They were in fact twin sons of singer Ricky Nelson (a true icon in America due to his numerous hits and 2 number ones) and grandsons of Ozzie and Harriett Nelson, who also had a number one hit in the 30s. Number one hits by rock bands hardly occur nowadays, nevertheless ‘Lightning Strikes Twice’ is a definite slice of melodic rock at its best.
