It tries hard, but doesn't put you on the canvas.

I adore Scott Weiland; love Stone Temple Pilots, his solo work, his latest album with the Wildabouts and Velvet Revolver too (in parts), so this "super-group" of sorts, with Weiland and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (Guns 'N' Roses) also on board , should be a knockout. It tries hard, but doesn't put you on the canvas.

It has a shiny, sleek attack courtesy of Bumblefoot's mix, which really injects energy into the cochlea; what it doesn't have is enough memorable tunes. It's odd that Weiland didn't write this music for this release because the STP sound is all over it – of course his vocal phrasing is distinctive and woozily lovely.

'Small Batch Whiskey' is as dirty as a crystal meth addict's bathroom, all sirening guitars and lilting Weiland beauty and when they hit a groove – the Roger Taylor screams in the middle of a handclapping, rising and falling 'Grand Applause' – they are undeniable.

But sometimes they conform to what we are expecting, heavy backing, Poppy chorus, wailing solo, all good, but all already there in abundance; 'Aqualung' only has this although Weiland tries his Glammy best and 'Long Ago' slowly opens to reveal Nickelback – not the best present...

Bumblefoot has a great time with his solos, warm and widdlesome when they need to be, the acoustic offer in 'Til' The Dust Is Gone' an eyebrow raiser and when Art Of Anarchy allow themselves to be a bit off kilter, they approach something fine; it is just that they get their head down and power through the Modern Rock and Metal landscape too often.

Art Of Anarchy? I used to attend Anarchist meetings and always marvelled at the organisation to get us all into a room at the same time with an agenda; this brand of anarchy would order tea and biscuits too.
