The bare bones of some great tracks are there, they just lack the muscle to carry it off.

HOLD (which is an acronym of the members' last names) are a self-professed "Indie band" on their Facebook page, but their sound is edgier and deeper than that description implies. The album is strung together along contemplative rhythms which Anthony Hurley presides over with loose but richly-toned vocals.

'You And I' opens with thick, crisp guitar, think Western-shoot-out tension building. Hurley does some of his best work on this opener, contrasting soft and thoughtful with a casual, more flamboyant style. This array of sounds is characteristic of HOLD throughout the whole album; it works great for a rhythmically unpredictable and tonally-full album but does sometimes leave any melody and hooks lacking.

'Still Waiting' brings a bit more of the energy we've been waiting for from the first three tracks. You'll be kept waiting a little longer though because the heavy guitar riff and drawn out vocals do little to keep this newfound spark alight. The rhythms get Funkier on the offbeat 'The Known Of Yesterday' with Pete Laramee going to town on the scales in the solo and bassist Dave DeMarco pulling some big bassy punches.

Despite this, it just doesn't seem to hang all that well together. Hurley's voice doesn't always seem to match the heavier guitar; take 'Valor' for example, where Hurley seems flat and two-dimensional in comparison to the snappy, spirited drumming and tight, overdriven guitar.

It's pretty hard to distinguish the songs as the album goes on, the guitar seemingly getting heavier, but still just as directionless and Hurley's vocals more pained and draining. Ironic that the penultimate track is 'Pain' before you reach 'Losing It' by which point I sort of was.

HOLD's self-titled album is deliberative and explorative and their writing reflects this; polyphonic rhythms develop unpredictably while solos meander, powerful guitar hooks pack a punch and some loose vocals cut across it all not really seeming to hold a note. The bare bones of some great tracks are there, they just lack the muscle to carry it off.
