Pretty uninspired and dated.

Push are a four-piece traditional Classic Rock band from the Baltimore/ Washington area of the U.S.A., 'Friction' is their second album following on from their 2011 self-titled debut. The band were formed back in 2003 by main-man Geo DeCampo, who handles vocals and lead guitar as well as being the principal song-writer and also having a hand in production duties.

In the albums attached bio, Push state they are a seasoned Rock band but the rest of the claims in there – that they combine today's modern heavy music with classic guitar hooks – I find way off the mark. What is really on offer is pretty uninspired and dated.

To be fair, opening track 'Take Away' has an up-tempo Hard Rocking riff and a nice lead solo between DeCampo and co-guitarist Joe Holbrook, but the sound has all the production qualities of a 1980's Hair Metal demo. 'Do What You Want' is slow and laboured with alternated distorted and clean vocals, perhaps being the aforementioned "modern" influence.

The faster Hard Rocking tracks such as 'Flying Girl', 'Run Thru The Fire' and 'Angel Of Mercy' are competent enough, but nothing inventive or classy and nothing that hasn't been heard a thousand times before; even DeCampo's vocals barely rise above ordinary.

If it wasn't for the band's U.S. origins, I'd say the overall sound of the album is that of an NWOBHM demo. The tracks on the first 'Metal For Muthas' album from back in 1980 sounded better than this. We could be generous and say that 'Friction' is Push's difficult second album, and admittedly I've not heard the first, but that's the only excuse I can come up with.

Mercifully, the album is just thirty-six minutes and eight tracks long, but even that includes two versions of '...Want'; the other featuring a guest female vocalist. I can happily put up with music that isn't particularly good so long as you can feel some sort of energy or passion that the artists really mean what they are doing.

But regrettably for me, this is dull and lifeless and whilst there must be something to have kept the band going for twelve years, it doesn't seem like there's any heart and soul put into the recording. And that's surely the biggest let down of all.
