It's something of a return to the style established on the 2006 debut 'End Of Silence' and its 2009 follow-up 'Innocence and Instinct'.

Album number five (not counting the re-working of their fourth album) from Christian Modern Rock band Red and it's something of a return to the style established on the 2006 debut 'End Of Silence' and its 2009 follow-up 'Innocence and Instinct'. The subsequent releases (2011 'Until We Have Faces' and 2013 'Release The Panic') incorporated a number of Industrial and programmed elements that divided opinion amongst their fan base; the band seem to have recognised these indiscretions and concentrated on creating something more in line with what their main audience wants to hear. In fact, some of the concerns aimed at 'Release....' were addressed with the re-mixed and re-calibrated collection of some of the albums tracks featuring the usual Red orchestral embellishments.

'Of Beauty And Rage' was funded by a PledgeMusic campaign and released via producer Rob Graves. Red are now essentially a three-piece featuring Michael Barnes (vocals), Anthony Armstrong (guitars, programming) and Randy Armstrong (bass, piano) with help from drummer Dan Johnson and Graves who provides able support with the more technical sound enhancements. Red's style has always been epic in scope, featuring sweeping orchestrations alongside a barrage of riffs and Barnes' ability to switch between clean and harsh vocals; it is Barnes' performance this time that warrants most recognition. Emotional and charismatic yet angst ridden when required, he lifts the material to something more than average, at the same time complimenting the music as more than just a singer.

Following the punchy atmospherics of (proper) album opener 'Impostor' and the brutally addictive 'Shadow And Soul', one or two tracks on this release have a rather close Muse feel in the way they are structured and arranged (check out 'What You Keep Alive' as a good example) but this comparison is not meant to be detrimental in any way. 'Gravity Lies' is both angry and emotive in equal measure and the face melting riffs and incendiary vocals sit nicely next to some subtle acoustics and vocals of a more melodic nature. 'Take Me Over' is probably the most commercial track and would make a great single. The song is direct and the hook simply will not let go.

'Of Beauty And Rage' may be a couple of songs too long for the casual listener but I was never struggling at any time and my interest levels remained high throughout. It would be great to see Red hit the U.K. some time and I think along with Skillet and The Letter Black, they would complete a fantastic touring package... one can only pray.
