'Back For The Attack' is the third in Dokken's holy trinity and has aged the best.

Among the best song-writers of the US Hard Rock genre, Dokken had been building slowly from the re-release of their promising 1981 debut, to 1984's Rocking 'Tooth And Nail' along with the utterly brilliant 1985 record 'Under Lock And Key' (all already available from Rock Candy). After the recording of the Nightmare On Elm St soundtrack song 'Dream Warriors', the band went on to make the rest of 'Back For The Attack', which was recorded in 1987, again with super producer Neil Kernon.

Musically the band were firing on all cylinders and the phenomenal George Lynch was the poster boy for guitar magazines all over the world. The brilliant axeman plays inspired solos on every song here, and whilst it was no secret that Lynch and Don Dokken didn't get on, Kernon skilfully handled the situation and the album at least matched its predecessor song-wise, albeit with a slightly tougher edge.

The memorable 'Prisoner', insistent 'Heaven Sent' and the catchy single 'Burning Like A Flame' are among the many highlights, along with the Lynch-fests 'Kiss Of Death' and the instrumental 'Mr Scary', whilst 'So Many Tears', 'Night By Night' and '...Warriors' are all melodic bliss with great harmony vocals and big hooks. There are maybe a couple of songs that are a half-notch below, but that's what happened pretty much across the board when CD became the main medium and everyone started making longer albums. Dokken were luckier than most in having four talented writers, although it's interesting to note that Lynch and bassist Jeff Pilson were the only ones involved in all the songs.

This version of the album sounds better than ever and even has the 'Back For The Attack' song itself tagged on as a bonus, it's actually better than I remembered it and should have been on the original. There are some surprises in Malcolm Dome's sleeve essay too, as the main members not getting on was the least of their problems. Pilson admits to being off his face on drugs for most of it, whilst producer Kernon was completely burned out after spending ten months on the album (he had to pass on producing Queensr├┐che's 'Operation: Mindcrime' because of it), resulting in the mix being handled by Steve Thompson and Mike Barbiero, who used some of the wrong takes and it was too late to change them. Even so, 'Back For The Attack' is the third in Dokken's holy trinity and has aged the best.
