Beautiful, moving and simply irresistible.

There’s a story here: ‘Mosaik’ came out back in March but with so much hitting the shops around that time it seems to have slipped under the radar somewhat. When I recently played it to Paul Jerome Smith, excitable and enthusiastic as he is, he went overboard about it and suggested that despite the fact that it’s been out a while now (in Europe at least; it didn’t see the States till September) it was far too good an album not to be given its fair share of column inches in Fireworks and Rocktopia. And, as ever, he is of course correct.

‘Mosaik’ is a beautifully-crafted slow burner from a young quartet from Hannover who only came together in 2007. It’s Frames’ second release, following on from a self-pressed EP which came out last year, and an album which if there is any justice in the world should open a number of doors for them. It’s completely instrumental, and as the title might suggest, the eleven often inter-linked compositions create a patchwork or mosaic of styles which not only makes the album hard to describe, but also the band almost impossible to pigeonhole.

What Jonas Meyer, Manuel Schönfeld, Moses Hoffman and Kiryll Kulakowski have put together is pretty much a unique soundscape for the twenty-first century with roots reaching back to Seventies’ German artrock. Despite the guitar, keyboards, bass and drums line-up it’s not really metal as such, but if you’re the sort of person who can lose themselves in, say, a lengthy instrumental passage by Riverside, for example, you’ll discover one of the most atmospheric and evocative albums you’re ever likely to hear. Although it’s delightfully played from start to finish it would be an insult just to say that ‘Mosaik’ is ‘pleasant’ because there is so much more to it than that. The compositions have real depth and dissecting them is like peeling away layers of an onion – there’s always something more to discover and explore. Over exactly an hour the songs ebb and flow like the tide while moods change like the wind; a friend described it as one of those albums that sneaks up on you, tiptoes away and then sneaks back a second time when you least expect it. As someone who’s metal through and through I shouldn’t really like ‘Mosaik’ but I do, largely because it works on so many different levels: just sit and listen to ‘Insomnia’, smack in the middle of the album, and you’ll see what I mean. (And real I’m a sucker for penultimate track and guitar work-out ‘Audacity’ too.) Beautiful, moving and simply irresistible.
