A classy power metal album with bags of character, top class musicianship and great vocals.

It has been ten years since Zak Stevens left Savatage to begin work with Circle II Circle. The band’s first album ‘Watching In Silence’ arrived in 2003 and quite amazingly seven years later we have the band’s fifth studio effort ‘Consequence Of Power’. For obvious reasons Circle II Circle releases have always been compared to Savatage’s music, however with this latest effort it is fair to say that the Circle II Circle sound has moved on from Stevens’ previous band to such an extent that the classy brand of power metal produced here stands firmly on its own, without too many nods to the past. Yes CIIC still show a deference to the theatrically led music of Savatage, as witnessed with the whirling, up tempo ‘Redemption’ and the piano led ‘Blood Of An Angel’ (which opens with a guitar and vocal melody that reminds of Wings ‘Live And Let Die’); however elsewhere on this album the approach is more up and at ‘em!

Opener ‘Whispers In Vain’ and the title track are an uncompromising opening blast. Leaving you in no doubt that you are in for one heck of a journey through a mixture of classic era Iron Maiden inspired rockers, that manage to add in the more commercial attack of the likes of Dokken’s George Lynch at his strutting, preening best. The guitar pyrotechnics of Andy Lee are simply blinding as he powers his way through riff after meaty riff. However his faultless fret flurries are matched by Mitch Stewart on bass and drummer Johnny Osborn to create a spectacularly effective unit. Rightly so, Stevens pushes his rich and powerful voice onto centre stage throughout ‘Consequence Of Power’ and he elevates the likes of the atmospheric ‘Episodes Of Mania’, which mixes break-neck riffing with more melodic drum led passages and the full on Sabbath assault of ‘Anathema’ into mighty power metal classics. The latter of those two tracks also finds Lee effortlessly firing out a soaring guitar solo of the highest order. While the bombastic bass heavy ‘Out Of Nowhere’, which fuses together a threatening guitar burst to a dramatic, yet melodic chorus, is another high octane riff-fest that takes no prisoners.

With ‘Consequence Of Power’, Circle II Circle have managed to combine the grandiose music of Stevens’ previous band with an altogether more hard hitting and contemporary sound that whilst appealing to fans of Savatage’s approach, will also bring many on board who found that band’s over the top theatrics too much to cope with. If you are seeking a classy power metal album with bags of character, top class musicianship and great vocals, then look no further than ‘Consequence Of Power’.
