There is little to get excited about here with only a few songs offering something new.

It can certainly be argued that female fronted gothic/symphonic rock is becoming a very well worn genre, so it’s easy to be sceptical when I chanced upon Finland’s Katra for this review.

Kristian Kangasniemi supplies some impressive guitar work to ‘Delirium’ and avoids the predictable symphonic guitar chops that so many players favour. Within the confines of the band’s wall of sound singer Katra sounds impressive enough. It’s only on the quieter moments that her vocals seem to diminish somewhat. The obvious comparison of Within Temptation comes up on ‘One Wish Away’ though the guitar work is more up front on this song. The melody is both exciting and upbeat and its clear the band have some strong ideas.

Unfortunately ‘If There Is No Tomorrow’ suffers from sounding too much like the previous song in structure and you cannot help but reach for the skip button. The stalking style of guitar work fits in nicely with the song title ‘Vendetta’ and it’s a welcome change of pace that I enjoyed. If the band can take some chances like this and break out of the confines of this genre then there is no reason for them not to rise above the rest.

The intro of title track ‘Out Of The Ashes’ leads us into a false sense of hope as the double bass drums rumble and the guitars go into attack mode before it all goes a bit limp. Katra clearly has a good voice but for me it lacks the clarity and attitude to take the songs in the directions they need to go.
Listening to ‘End Of Silence’ you cannot help but feel that this acoustic style of music suits Katra Solopuro’s voice better. I could imagine her sounding more comfortable attempting something in the style of Mostly Autumn than the material on offer here!

There is little to get excited about here with only a few songs offering something new. Saying that there is an audience for this style of music that I am sure will embrace this release with open arms. Though for the casual fan delving into this release there is little to recommend.
