This DVD isn't about revealing excess, it's about a band struggling to get a break in a hugely competitive world.

Twisted Sister is the self-proclaimed "Grand Funk of Glam and NY Dolls of Metal". Whether you think Twisted is a joke, or (like me) you love a good foot-stomping rendition of 'We're Not Gonna Take It', this new documentary film, 'We Are Twisted Fucking Sister!' is a deliciously unique insight into the band.

What makes the film interesting, and sets it apart from most band DVDs, is that it isn't just a film of a live show. It's jam-packed (believe me, it's over two hours) with interviews with current members, past members, wives, producers and others, all of whom offer really personal descriptions of TS trying to make their name in the midst of the Punk take-over in eighties New York. You get to see clips of the pre-1983 bar shows, which the band played up to six nights a week.

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine For Melodic Rock Music

It's not just from the band's perspective. A nice touch is the short snippets of interviews with fans of TS in the seventies and eighties, fans who drove through sleet and snow, crossed States and did it all multiple nights a week to see this angry, dynamic band. There's not too much drama or racy titbits, if that's what you're looking for; indeed, the band come across as sensible, thoughtful and able to laugh at themselves. Dee Snider especially provides a touch of comedy on camera, as he does on stage. But this DVD isn't about revealing excess, it's about a band struggling to get a break in a hugely competitive world; Eddie Ojeda makes a great comparison between today and then and I think that's what brings this DVD to life – Twisted's ability to cross decades and connect them through their experiences and music.

There's a lot of variety in terms of media for this film and clearly a lot of effort has gone into gathering the information and establishing the context around TS's rise in their first ten years. If you're looking for live footage, and aren't fussed on the early stuff, I'd go for another DVD; sometimes all the interviews can get a bit dry. But if you have any interest in music history, band business, Twisted Sister's biography and the band's place in the history of Glam and Rock, this is definitely a DVD you will enjoy.
