Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons - Boston Music Room, London (UK) - 24 November 2016

More Rock 'n' Roll than you can imagine, this is good time stuff... nothing more, nothing less. It's dirty and greasy in a good way and authenticity drips out of every pore.

Playing a mixture of their own and Motörhead songs, some of their new original material is more towards The Rolling Stones, The Who or Garage Rock and Roll rather than relentless Punk Rock or Speed Metal. It is still extremely loud, but no longer faster than anything else and this is great as it provides contrast to the well-known Motörhead material, something fresh to highlight and compliment the classics rather than detract from them.

Among the new material is the new single 'Spiders' off their latest EP and whilst Phil Campbell drops a great traditional solo, it has a chunky groove and a modern edge. As if to thank the crowd for their attention for new material, they then go straight into a Motörhead number twice the pace for the speed freaks in the audience. All the hits get an airing, 'Ace Of Spades', 'Eat The Rich' and more. They also do a Rocked up version of ZZ Top's 'Sharp Dressed Man' and a cracking rendition of Black Sabbath's 'Sweet Leaf', which is apparently Campbell's favourite song since childhood.

There's also a Rockabilly version of Hawkwind's 'Silver Machine' of which Eddie Spaghetti would be proud. The crowd fist punch the air, especially during '...Spades' and loudly call for the band to come back for an encore, during which Campbell dedicates David Bowie's 'Heroes' to absent friends, at which point the crowd break into a spontaneous chant of "Lemmy, Lemmy", and while it's not the best version in the world (to be fair to the vocalist it seems to be very different from the stuff he usually sings) it gets better at the end and the crowd appreciate the sentiment letting their passions fly again during last song 'Killed By Death'.

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would enjoy Motörhead songs without Lemmy Kilminster. Since Motörhead is sadly no more, this truly could be the next best thing!
