The Down 'n' Outz – The Borderline, London (UK) – July, 23rd  2010

At the start of what was to be a truly amazing rock ‘n’ roll weekend, we arrived at the tiny Borderline Club in Soho, located right behind the favourite rock star haunt, Crobar. I never even realised this club existed but although compact and bijou, it was a nice little venue. On entering, it seemed like a who’s who of the rock scene with people like Luke Morley (not surprising considering drummer Phil Martin(i) is also a member of The Union), John Mitchell of It Bites (a great supporter of the Touchstone guys and a Joe Elliott fan), Cliff Evans of Tank (although I always seem to bump into Cliff in Crobar), to name but three, along with numerous journalists (Dave Ling, Jerry Ewing, Malcolm Dome & Derek Oliver), photographers (Mr Grumpy himself – Ross Halfin) and the like. We didn’t manage to get there in time to see Touchstone, but they had been cut from the usual five piece to just an acoustic set by vocalist Kim Seviour and guitarist Adam Hodgson.

Having had a bit of a sneak preview of Joe and the boys when they performed in Sheffield a few months ago, I was glad that they started the set with the Elton John cover of ‘Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding’. Joe seems as passionate about learning to play these songs as he is about Def Leppard – a very refreshing change. As I mentioned above, drummer Phil Martini is also the drummer in not only The Union, but along with guitarists Guy Griffin and Paul Guerin and keyboard player Keith Weir, they are all full time members of The Quireboys, so where they’re going to find the time to do the Down ‘n’ Outz as well remains to be seen as the Quireboys touring schedule is, to say the least, extensive. The bass player is Ronnie Garrity who has played in the past with Mick Ralphs in Raw Glory and was a founder member of the Henry Gorman Band – the band I followed all over the place when I was in my teens, so it was nice to bump into Henry at the gig, there to show support for his mate. Strangely, there were about half a dozen people in the audience from my home town, so I felt right at home!

The rest of the set was a good mix of Mott/Ian Hunter/British Lions covers from the album ‘My Regeneration’, including my personal favourites ‘Golden Opportunity’, ‘Overnight Angels’, ‘Who Do You Love’, ‘Shouting And Pointing’ and ‘Good Times’. These were interspersed with perhaps lesser known Mott The Hoople songs like ‘Whizz Kid’ and ‘One Of The Boys’, some of which were hinted at being included on a second album by the Down ‘n’ Outz next year. The surprise video hit ‘England Rocks’ almost brought the house down and, having got to number 4 in the US Classic Rock charts, I think it’s going to be something of an anthem for the band.

The encore was what everyone had been anticipating though. After playing the classic MTH hits ‘All the Way From Memphis’ and ‘Roll Away the Stone’ the arrival on stage of Ian Hunter to sing ‘All The Young Dudes’ provided a perfect end to the show. It’s so good to see Joe really enjoying himself on stage and I have to say, in a lot of ways I think he looks (and dare I say SOUNDS) far more comfortable with this material than with Def Leppard.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
