Stunningly brilliant!

Five years after their wonderful 'She Says Gold' album, Enbound are back with the even better 'The Blackened Heart' release, a collection of superior Power Metal songs blended with Lars Safsund's vocal talents. Safsund has always been a truly great vocalist, supplying his silky smooth voice for the wonderful Work Of Art as well as delivering lively and fun performances live, especially during the band's Firefest performances where his boundless enthusiasm and obvious joy at being on the stage was highly contagious. Now take him out of the constraints of AOR and place him in a Melodic Power Metal band and you have something truly special (although why he names himself as Lee Hunter for Enbound's releases, I don't know).

Opening track 'Falling' sets the scene, Safsund's layered harmony vocals over keys before the guitars crash in with an almost Progressive Metal vibe. The backing keyboards always keep the music on the right side of my preferred line, while the chorus invokes prime-time Helloween at their 'Keepers Of The Seven Keys' best. It isn't just Safsund's vocal excellence that create such a brilliantly successful tapestry, as Marvin Flowberg (guitars), Mike Cameron Force (ex-Zonata, drums) and Swede (bass) are all on top of their games, delivering powerful backing and intricate break-downs with the touch of master craftsmen, everything wrapped up in a stunning production by Jacob Hansen (Pretty Maids).

Of the nine up-tempo songs on the album, there is not one filler and every one is of a similar amazingly high quality, so choosing highlights is nigh on impossible. The one ballad, 'They Don't Really Know', shows the band can change the pace when required, mainly with Safsund's exquisite vocals over piano backing, before the full band kicks in towards the end. It's another great track, but, if there is any miniscule criticism of Enbound, it's simply that I'd love to see them expand their sound to include more variety like this.

But that really is such a pretty irrelevant issue when you are presented with an album as stunningly brilliant as this.
