I'm all for bands making money and carrying on but sacrificing your heritage on the altar of profitability is never a good idea.

Essentially this is a "greatest hits" re-recording of eleven tracks culled from Fair Warning's first three studio albums – 'Fair Warning', 'Rainmaker' and 'Go'. There seems to be a disease creeping into the music industry with various bands re-recording classic tracks and full albums. Anyone who knows how the industry works knows exactly the reasons for this and it's nothing to do with better technology, it's all about the money. That said, re-recording new versions sometimes help return control of rights to the band.

I absolutely love FW. I own every album, import, EP and DVD, but would I spend my hard-earned on 'Pimp Your Past'? It pains me to say that I most likely wouldn't. I'm a firm believer, irrespective of the reasons for re-recording and even if they far outweigh the originals production wise, that classic albums should be left alone and retain their place in fans hearts for exactly what they are – classics.

Whilst the re-recorded versions on this album are, for the most part, true to the originals with slight differences in terms of delivery rather than arrangement, FW are missing one key early days component that cannot be replaced – Andy Malecek. His searing lead work on the first three albums is nothing short of stunning and while Helge Engelke's no slouch, for me, it feels as if Malecek's absence stands out when inevitably you cannot get the original versions out of your head while making comparisons between the two.

Fair Warning musically can wipe the floor with many of their peers, such is the talent contained in the band. Tommy Heart's one of the finest vocalists in the genre, Engelke tortures his Sky guitar, Jurgen CC Behrens drumming is a huge part of their sound while the quietly understated bass and backing vocals of Ule Ritgen hold it all together.

If you were hearing these songs for the first time I've no doubt you would be stopped dead in your tracks wondering who the hell that was and why you hadn't heard of them before. However, for long-standing fans, while we're all appreciative of new recordings, most will agree that it has been a pretty pointless exercise musically and one done solely for the benefit of greater earnings. There's nothing wrong with that, I'm all for bands making money and carrying on but sacrificing your heritage on the altar of profitability is never a good idea.
