Quite literally the stuff of legend.

I'm still having a hard time accepting that the mighty Ronnie James Dio is no longer with us and he'll not be giving us any more music. Consolation can come from the fact that he did leave an amazing legacy behind, featuring classic albums with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band. As part of his enduring appeal, Dio's two appearances at the famed Monsters Of Rock shows held at Donington have become available - and a worthy addition to any Dio fans collection they are too.

Anybody who was a fan of Ronnie knows he didn't tend to give bad live performances, so you know before you even hear a note of this collection that it's going to be good. What we have here are two shows promoting two different Dio albums. The first is from 1983, with Ronnie showing off his new band on the back of their awesome debut 'Holy Diver' in front of the Monsters Of Rock faithful. Confidence is high as Ronnie, backed by Viv Campbell, Jimmy Bain and Vinny Appice blaze through some of the tracks from the legendary debut album, while mixing it in with Sabbath and Rainbow classics such as 'Children Of the Sea', Heaven And Hell', 'Man On the Silver Mountain', 'Stargazer' and even a short burst of 'Starstruck' from Rainbow 'Rising'. It's a killer set list played with enthusiasm and gusto.

The second show from 1987 features the full time keyboard player Claude Schnell getting proper recognition, along with Craig Goldy on guitar, replacing the departed Viv Campbell. Again, the set list spans Sabbath and Rainbow, while including tracks from Dio's current album at that time, 'Dream Evil'. There's quite a few song changes with 'The Last In Line', 'Rock And Roll Children' and a turbo charged version of 'Neon Knights' in there with the staples. Again, another great performance from Ronnie and company - only what we came to expect and ultimately took for granted.

The discs come together in a lovely digi pack, complete with booklet and replica laminates from the shows. If you're a fan of Ronnie's, you know how good he was live so there's nothing here to put you off checking out these recordings. Quite literally the stuff of legend.
