Little Hurricane - The Borderline, London (UK) - 2 May 2017

The San-Diego based self-described "Dirty Blues Band" Little Hurricane celebrated their third studio album release 'Same Sun, Same Moon' on May 2nd at the Borderline in London, their only UK gig, before touring through Europe. I was really excited about the live sound of a two-piece band. Next to me I could hear some people talking, impressed by the unique style the band has proven on their new studio album, having travelled all the way from north England to hear the band playing for the first time. Among the full-house you could also find many loyal and established fans, enthusiastically waiting and enjoying the support band Bluebird Parade.

Little Hurricane's set up on stage was very simple: a drum kit, two mic stands, some amps, two guitars and a silver flying guitar case, remodelled as a table, behind a retro-microphone. The applause was huge when CC jumped on stage, wearing a beautiful vintage dress . Tone took over the microphone with a "Hello London, thanks for having us" and the show began.

The thrilling opening of their song 'Superblues' immediately set a statement of who they are: powerful drumming from the cute-looking and constantly smiling young lady and smashing guitar playing from the passionate and impulsive singer Tone, mixed up with meaningful lyrics: "If you want something, you got to work for it. If you love someone, you got to mean it!"

The second song 'Fourth of July' had the crowd clapping along with CCs beats. Those little moments in between the song, e.g. when Tone sang the word "Sex appeal" and winked at CC, that is what makes the band so honest and pure. The crowd could feel, that they are in love.

'Mt. Señorita' was the first song off their new studio album 'Same Sun, Same Moon'. A very laidback song, with unexpected bell sounds in it. The melodic, warming chords of 'For Life' spread out some romantic vibes, feeling the Californian sun in their hearts. After Tone announced the next song, 'Bad Business', I heard some fans saying, "Oh yes, that is my favourite song." And there it was again, this wild, storming drive in their songs, which lives up to their band- name. The outstanding guitar playing of Tone, when he laid his guitar on the case-desk to slap on it, created not only fiery sounds but also an impressive show to prove how creative and talented he is. Whilst playing the instrumental song 'The March of Life' I felt like in a Wild West Terentino movie. Indeed the band got their influences from Country legend Johnny Cash and definitely wouldn't disappoint him when they played a cover of 'God's Gonna Cut You Down.'

After announcing the next song, 'Ain't No Sunshine', I was afraid my stunning impression might decline, as I can't hear this song anymore. But surprisingly CC's dynamic playing and Tone's smoky and rough voice brought this song to another level.

All good shows should end with a grand finale and the song 'Crocodile Tears' allowed them to do just that. Starting with a mysterious and deep-western sounding instrumental, played with the glass slide on the guitar, leading to a gripping, smooth groove in the verse followed by an intensive, powerful beat and crashing vocals in the chorus. A thrilling ending that kept the audience shouting for almost ten minutes after the band already left the stage: "One more song!" Interesting ending without an encore but at the same time that left us wanting even more.

Little Hurricane - Live 1

Overall I was surprised how full this two- piece duo sounded. I heard some people saying they would miss a bass guitar sometimes, but in general the crowd loved it and it didn't feel like anything missing, as they provided many specials around it. With fresh, new sound effects and grooving beats they brought the old Delta Blues or Garage-Rock up to date. What makes them so special is their authentic and real performance; the mix of CC's captivating smiling and Tone's fiery eyes and the interaction between them was spell-binnding. They didn't talk a lot in between the songs, but their expressive lyrics told us all we need to know. They left space in developing their show and sounds, but that's what makes me and many other fans so excited about more records and shows. They are definitely a little Thunderstorm in the Blues scene to bring in some fresh wind.
