Dirty White Boyz - 'Down And Dirty' Hot

With a great mix of Blues, AOR, and a bit of Sleaze, 'Down And Dirty' is a class effort.

From the band name, I'd have liked this to be a Glam tribute to Foreigner, but it was not to be (maybe Juke Box Heroez?). Instead, Dirty White Boyz is the brainchild of ex-Kiss Of The Gypsy front-man Tony Mitchell, morphing from a solo album into a group project, thanks to the Rock bods at Escape Music.

Any band that stick a "z" in their name in this sort of way are automatically assumed by me (judge an album by its cover? Yes!) to be a Glam Rock band of some sort, so it was a nice surprise to hear some sweet Melodic Hard Rock coming out of the speakers. Mitchell has a bit of a rasping voice, but can hold a tune well and he's also been lucky in his choice of guitarist for the group, as Paul Hume injects life into every song with his solos.

'Down And Dirty' is a nice change from pure AOR, with one foot in the gutter as well as one on the stage. The song titles tell a story, with the likes of 'Hangin' On A Heartache', 'All In The Name Of Rock 'N' Roll' and 'Playin' Dirty' giving you some idea of what to expect. It's all quite repetitive, with sweet riffs and fist-in-the-air choruses, and a nice melodic Blues base that allows the songs to take their own direction.

Dirty White Boyz have produced a very nice album. It may be a bit generic for some, but will certainly please plenty more. It's a quality product that is made even better by some seriously well injected guitar parts and Mitchell's down & dirty vocals. With a great mix of Blues, AOR, and a bit of Sleaze, 'Down And Dirty' is a class effort.
