A huge slab of Symphonic Rock which, at times, could take on Nightwish at their peak.

Danish Symphonic Metal band Akoma have finally got around to releasing their debut album after over a decade together. Formed in 2004 by vocalist Tanya Bell and guitarist Morten Bell, the band had two previous releases – 'Lost Forest' (Promo 2007) and 'The Other Side' (EP 2012) – which enabled the band to gain recognition and appear on the bill with such luminaries as Leaves' Eyes and Wintergarden. Fast forward to 2017 and the band are ready to unleash 'Revangels' with a full line-up of the aforementioned Bell's, plus the additional guitars of Andreas Pedersen and powerful rhythm section of Stefan Nielsen (bass) and Rune Frisch (drums). The album was recorded with acclaimed producer Alexander Krull (LE, Atrocity) and features the fantastic artwork of Stefan Kellerman (Epica, Kamelot).

Kicking off proceedings we have the very dramatic 'Enticing Desire' where we are treated to both the full-on Operatic pitch of Tanya Bell's voice, whilst also cleverly mixing in a natural tone, almost convincing you there is a second vocalist involved. This cleverly links to the title track which additionally features the beautiful tone of Liv Kristine (LE); the depth of sound on this track, complete with the intense guitar work, makes this a definite highlight of the album. The album flows into another haunting offering entitled 'Change Of Propensity', the eerie keyboard then gets battered with the powerhouse sound followed by the siren sound of Tanya Bell which brings it all together.

'Mesopotamia' and 'Hands Of Greed' continue with the same formula to a very high standard, then we get hit between the eyes with the intense 'Vira'. The pounding drums propel the song forward and just as it eases, the guitars take over. Whilst it's very bombastic it does not go over the top, which easily happens in this genre. 'Humanity' slows everything down and this beautiful ballad showcases Tanya Bell's range to great effect. 'Heartless Deceiver' and the bonus track 'Bittersweet Memories' conclude a perfect journey through 'Revangels'.

Akoma have, with 'Revangels', produced a huge slab of Symphonic Rock which, at times, could take on Nightwish at their peak. This is going to be high on the wish-lists of fans of Gothic Metal, not only because of the guest appearance of Kristine, but due to the sheer quality of this debut effort. It may have taken over a decade to release an album, but it's certainly one to be proud of.
