Gary Hoey - Nell's Jazz And Blues, London (UK) - 02 June 2017

Sometimes you walk into a venue that just oozes character, charm and a great vibe, and a packed Nell's Jazz And Blues did exactly that. That vibe was set to continue as Gary Hoey hit the stage tonight in what was his first ever visit to the UK with his band. Hoey was here as support for the equally amazing Eric Gales, but that didn't mean he skimped on a fantastic performance!

Hoey has released some twenty albums in his career and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Brian May, Peter Frampton, Dick Dale, Johnny Winter and Leslie West to name just a few. He has also produced and co-written with Lita Ford and is in fact working on her new album.

Gary Hoey Live 1

Few people are able to take to a stage with little or no sound check, capture the audience in the first few chords and sound off the scale, but Hoey achieved this tonight! He was clearly pleased to be here and pulled out all the stops. He kicked off with the groovy, riff-laden 'Going Down', Hoey's guitar sang and screamed beautifully and filled the room with a massive sound. He slowed things down and dug in deep for 'Deja Blues' which emitted emotion with every note. Considering Hoey was only accompanied by drums and bass, the sheer size and quality of sound being produced was truly stunning.

After a quick thank you to Mascot Records for getting him over to play, Hoey launched into the title track of 'Dust And Bones'. A heavily phased guitar sound and Hoey's gruff powerful vocal pounded this great Rocker out to the appreciative audience. He continued with material from the new album, 'Back Up Against The Wall' had an old-school Blues styling that delivered the goods in every way. 'Who's Your Daddy' followed in a similar vein. Hoey wasn't into long wordy breaks between songs and as such the continual playing in the small venue and under many spotlights certainly heated up the band but they were clearly 'In The Zone' as the music flowed brilliantly.

Gary Hoey Live 2

There was a momentary pause as Hoey swapped his Strat for a Shiny Dobro for a collection of slide guitar-based tracks that included 'Box Car Blues' and the Johnny Winters-inspired 'Dust My Broom'. Hoey is undoubtedly one of the finest bottleneck players around. AJ Pappas on bass and Matt Scurfield on drums kept the train rolling on 'Steamroller' with more slide mastery. The crowd by this point were lapping up every second of this fret-board king. Hoey finished off a set, which ended far too quickly, with a rendition of Focus' 'Hocus Pocus' which ensured the band went out on a high as the crowd jumped.

Catching up with Hoey post gig, he confirmed that he'd had an absolute blast and definitely wants to return to the UK for more dates most likely in 2018. I for one cannot wait!
