Those willing to cast aside any genre prejudices they may have, may find something more rewarding.

Invidia are something of a new hard-edged Metal "super-group" formed by former and current members of In This Moment, Five Finger Death Punch and Skinlab. Vocalist Travis Johnson currently handles bass duties for ITM and guitarist Brian Jackson was formerly with Skinlab. They were the catalyst that initially got the ball rolling back in late 2015 and after hashing out musical ideas with producer Logan Mader (Fear Factory, Machine Head, Soulfly) the rest of the band came together, which now includes bass player Matt Snell, formerly of FFDP, drummer Darren Badorine and Skinlab guitarist Marcos Medina, who joined once the recording of the album was completed.

An Industrial undercurrent runs through 'As The Sun Sleeps' and I can just imagine a movie scene in a Gothic nightclub with the Invidia soundtrack pounding away in the background. The band manage to channel various FFDP and ITM influences without becoming plagiaristic or generic and there are trace elements of Marilyn Manson and Bullet For My Valentine amongst the grinding riffs and hard-hitting rhythms. The album has a dark vibe and as you would expect with song titles such as 'Rotten', 'Marching Dead', 'Smell The Kill' and 'Till Death', the mood is generally sombre and the music unrelenting.

Subtle keyboard textures and programmed nuances add depth to the overall sound and though Johnson's vocals are never going to win any awards, his menacing style and delivery is convincing enough and suits the material perfectly. 'Feed The Fire' (first single and video) has the most commercial chorus of the eleven tracks and as such has the greatest accessibility, whilst 'Step Up' is a fist-pumping anthem of a song with a knockout hook that could quite easily have come from FFDP's 'War Is The Answer' album.

'As The Sun Sleeps' has been my musical companion on journeys to and from work for almost a week and though hardly essential, it is far too good to retire to the coaster pile. Those of a nervous or purely "pink and fluffy" disposition will find little here but the stuff of nightmares. Those willing to cast aside any genre prejudices they may have, may find something more rewarding... if only a quicker way to get to work.
