Chantel McGregor - 100 Club, London (UK) - 23 June 2017

Chantel McGregor − The Charming Rock Angel

If you see a small, blonde girl with angel curls and a big smile, entering the stage, barefooted, you might think of soft Folk music, but you would never expect that already after the first song Caught Out, Chantel McGregor sets a statement − that cute girls can rock! Currently she is touring her album 'Lose Control' around Europe and I took in her show at the famous 100 Club in London on Friday 23nd June.

Chantel rose the temperature with the following two songs: Your fever and Burn Your Anger, which are both powerful Rock numbers with a melodic and catchy chorus, including remarkable guitar riffs that are greatly interacted between her and the brilliant band (Colin Sutton on bass and Ollie Goss on drums). Suddenly there was not a cute girl anymore on stage, but a powerful woman with tempting eyes.

Whilst she was changing her guitar, she was talking to the audience, obviously being happy about the full house that came to see her. I loved that twist of her character. She is very natural and funny as a person, but the moment she started to play her next song, she rocks Like No Other. I could see many fans in the first row singing along with her.

Then she brought back the Blues with a stunning instrumental of Avin A Giraffe. She absolutely proved how she rules her guitar, which was a mixture of styles from BB King to Stevie Ray Vaughan. The well- balanced distortion sound allowed us to hear every single note clearly. You could only hear a very tight and perfect playing, rewarded with a big round of applause at the end.

Although there were many Blues fans who were seeing Chantel for the first time, she could even convince them of her Prog Rock numbers Free falling or Southern belle. Latest when she was playing the title song of her current album Lose Control, she completely spell- boud us. A powerful Classic Rock number, kind of call and response between her guitar and her vocals. The guitar riffs were brilliant and the solo absolutely awesome.

Chantel's show is outstanding due to a great variation of styles. I Am No Good For You starts like a Western song, whilst the next song was more a Gothic Rock song. A title that suits her: She is Fabulous.

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine For Melodic Rock Music

The following instrumental was introduced as part of her new album, and if this was the first impression then I can't wait to hear the album. Mysterious sounds in the beginning kept us excited, building up from the bass guitar and the drums were perfectly staged until Chantel kicked in with a stunning solo, where she showed us all of her talent and proved that she has deserved to win twice the award for best Blues Guitarist in the UK. The song took approximately 10 minutes but it didn't feel like it at all, as it was absolutely emotional, strong and creative. The applause was almost as long as the song and I could hear the audience saying she is a female version of Joe Bonamssa and she has the groove of Hendrix.

Again a fantastic change, when she took her acoustic guitar and touched us with her soulful voice, showing her lovely and soft side, before she then straps back on her electric guitar and presented us a firework of Rock with the last two songs: Killing Time and Walk On Land. Although most people were speechless after the last solo, they still couldn't stop screaming at the end until Chantel played one of her best songs, Take The Power as an encore.

Chantel McGregor is outstandingly professional and a big surprise in the Rock industry. I am pretty sure that she is just at the beginning of her career and will rise internationally. Her cute look hides what's inside: a powerful woman. Once a major label told her that a girl wouldn't play the guitar like that, but Chantel might set a new area for women in the industry, against all stereotypes. In between the songs we could see her very charming, natural and lovely side that suits her blonde angel hair. But Hell ya, watch out for Chantel McGregor, a rock angel on the guitar!

She will perform an acoustic gig in London/Islington on the 15th of September.
