Lee Aaron / Neuronspoiler / Neverworld - Camden Underworld, London (UK) - 16 July 2017

I just caught the last few tracks from Neverworld due to a very early start. They were relatively heavy with some great guitar tone and shredding from their vocalist. Despite their heaviness, they were still listenable to a Classic Rock ear and so went down well with a Lee Aaron audience. There were some nice changes of tempo – a bit like classical movements – in their last song which proved there was a bit of light to the shade in any event. While the bass and second guitarist provided the deep end, the vocalist embroidered his shredding on the top and they were a decent opener.

Neuronspoiler reminded me of a cross between Iron Maiden and Queensrÿche, so while the guitarist had something of Bruce Dickinson about his tone for the lower registers, he also often went into a very accomplished Geoff Tate scream (when Queensrÿche were at their most Metal). There was lots of energy on stage as well as fist pumping, guitar necks up high and jumping. They were definitely there with the idea they had to put on a show and full marks for effort which was much appreciated by the audience.

They only seemed to have one dial, very loud and very fast, which was great on one level, but a little contrast might have had even more effect and allowed their singer to show off his voice even more. I also love a bit of a chorus and a change of movement within a song and they could perhaps think of introducing that rather than providing a one hundred percent Metal experience for the whole set, but these guys love their Metal and they've got all the techniques and styles. It was in-your-face and unapologetic and if you like it unremittingly hard and fast they were for you.

Lee Aaron, still looking like a doll (high kicking and not looking a day over thirty), proved that she deserves her place in Rock history because she delivered a blinder of a show tonight. She admitted she doesn't like doing the same album or even the same show twice and the material on offer was diverse, from the enjoyable Pop of 'Tomboy' and the songs like "Whatcha Do To My Body' for which she was well known, to the Hard Rock numbers like 'Metal Queen', she delivered them all with style and classy sex appeal. The front rows were pretty much all male apart from me and filled with adoring fans.

However, this was by no means a woman who has traded exclusively on her looks and I was genuinely excited by her performances of her new Blues Rock numbers 'Diamond Baby', 'I'm A Woman' and a cover of Deep Purple's 'Mistreated' which will apparently be on a new album. She has a major voice and in some ways, she was seriously short-changed earlier in her career when the more commercial material may not have shown off her true talent. Her version of 'Barely Holding On' was also immense and made one reflect on how she deserves as much respect as someone like Amy Winehouse for the sheer quality of her voice, maybe more as I can't imagine Aaron coming on too drunk to sing. Here was a woman who really cared about her fans; she made time to talk, sign and take photos with everybody who waited behind and she had a great rapport with the front row most of which seemed to go home on cloud nine. This was a great show that deserved a much bigger venue, but she had just returned for Bang Your Head in Germany so she's getting her fair share of large shows too. It was a privilege to see her still on top form and in such an intimate venue. If you didn't go you missed out!
