An engaging and energetic release.

Finnish Metallers Ember Falls debut album will be a guilty pleasure to Metal fans and may even prove acceptable to those inclined to go for something slightly less aggressive. It's got enough guitar riffs and the occasional growly vocal to keep the former happy, whilst retaining a saccharine sweet touch that will keep those more likely to worship at the altar of Brother Firetribe rather than In Flames or Amaranthe (it was produced by Jake E) interested.

The whole thing is more polished than Buckingham Palace's silverware and the standard of musicianship is extremely high throughout, particularly the guitar work; it's what you would expect from a Scandinavian release. Ember Falls aren't afraid to mix sounds, textures, different instruments and even different genres, although the underlying theme is Pop Metal. At times, it feels somewhat identikit in nature; crushing guitar riffs... check, banks of keyboards... check, the intermittent growled vocals... check, huge harmony-soaked chorus... check. Yet with that all said, it's backed up with such a depth and production that you'll likely feel yourself being swept away by songs like the catchy 'Of Letting Go', a kind of Disturbed on speed, or the breakneck 'The Enemy You Need' and the technically brilliant Metal of 'COE'.

Pleading ballad 'Freedom' is a weak song in comparison, but the electronic feel to 'Rising Tide' and 'Open Your Eyes', the latter with a semi-Rapped vocal, show that the band are no one trick pony. The stomping Metal of 'One More Time' is slick and sickly in equal measure and more electronic influences can be heard on the galloping album closer 'The Lamb Lies Down In Sacrifice', a song that should come with a health warning stating "not for the faint hearted".

Scandinavian bands have traditionally built on Rock music from other countries, twisting it into their own brand and coming up with something better. 'Welcome To Ember Falls' may be more synthetic than Katie Price's boobs, but it is nevertheless an engaging and energetic release.
