Definitely one to watch out for.

I've never really been a fan of albums that featured one person playing a multitude of instruments, often finding them a touch lightweight and missing the vibe of a full band's arrangement. However, it's time to completely change my opinion and introduce you to Italy's Fabri Kiareli. On this debut album 'Rise' Fabri has proved that it's possible to supply vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards to great effect and make it sound like a complete band that have spent a lifetime rehearsing and jamming together to come up with the tunes. Joining Fabri and contributing the drums (very well) is Mao Granata, a long time bandmate of Kiareli's in covers band Mr. No. Stylistically the album harks back to the late Seventies through to the tail end of the Eighties, but it doesn't sound like a throwback, as it sound relevant in today's market due to the overall feel and production, also courtesy of the obviously very talented Mr. Kiareli.

As for the songs, storming opener 'Fire And Dynamite' begins with the sound of a quickening heartbeat, before a riff straight out of the NWOBHM book of guitar playing cuts in, and the powerhouse drums propel the song along – think of a blend of Saxon and early Iron Maiden and you're there. Great chorus too! It's followed by the mid-tempo but still hard-rocking 'Feed The Hunger' with some deft touches of acoustic guitar complementing the riff, bringing to mind Tesla and White Lion. To these ears the likes of 'Love Renegade' and 'Burning Fever' bring to mind John Sykes era Thin Lizzy, 'Win Or Lose' pummels along at breakneck speed, with echoes of Judas Priest and Helloween, while 'Dangerous Love' is a Whitesnake sounding hard blues workout. There are a couple of great melodic rock anthems too, such as 'Stormwind', '(Ain't Done) Till It's Over' and 'Follow The Way' which is a duet with Alessandro Del Vecchio (Edge Of Forever, Eden's Curse.) No eighties style album is complete with a couple of decent ballads, 'Cold Hearted' is a mid-paced slow-burner, and 'Broken Dreams' is a great lighter-in-the-air singalong. Fabri obviously believes in saving the best till last though, the closing eight-minute epic 'The Meaning Of Life' begins with some serene acoustic work reminiscent of Rush circa '2112' before building to become a dramatic mid-tempo rocker with a heavy riff, but also has an eighties era Def Leppard feel. My only complaint is that it fades out when it would have benefited from a big ending, but it's followed by a hidden track, a heartfelt melancholy acoustic ballad.

With 13 tracks and clocking in at just under 73 minutes it's certainly value for money, the quality is consistently high and the musicianship excellent throughout. Definitely one to watch out for.
