For anyone who calls themselves a fan of Prog Metal, this is a must have.

Need are a Progressive Metal act from Athens in Greece. This album is their fourth studio release, yet sadly only the first I've heard by them. I say sadly because 'Hegaiamas: A Song For Freedom' is easily one of the better Melodic Prog Metal albums I've heard in quite a while.

The band draw on influences such as Evergrey, Symphony X, Fates Warning and Dream Theater to create their music. This can, on a lot of occasions, leave a band open to ridicule as they struggle to match what their idols have already done; Need, however, have nothing to worry about. Their music is wonderfully constructed, arranged, written and performed and in singer Jon V they have a man who can give the great Tom S. Englund (Evergrey) a run for his money. What really makes the songs on this album stand out for me the most are the intricate melodies that they have woven into the fabric of their music. Every track of this concept album is dripping with remarkable hooks that make the songs a pleasure to explore and get to know.

"Hegaiamas" apparently means freedom and Need have written a sixty minute plus concept album based around that theme. 'Rememory' starts things off and all I can say is "wow, what a way to start". Highly melodic vocals join with the stunning guitar work of Ravaya and these two elements are then combined with some of the best bass, keyboard and drum rhythms I've heard recently; all these guys can certainly play. 'Alltribe' is a technical Prog Metal workout with more than a nod to the great Zero Hour, but the wonderful melodies this band write can still be found throughout the song.

There are two other tracks I'd highlight. 'I.O.T.A.' is a five minute piece of philosophical dialogue between two actors, who talk about life and its complications, which might sound strange but the acting is good and it lulls your senses, that is until the twenty-three minute title track begins. Slow guitar, vocals and keyboards usher in a song which is full of top flight musicianship, clever understated vocals and dynamic arrangements. With this one epic, Need have shown the bands I previously mentioned that there is a new kid on the block to watch out for.

For anyone who calls themselves a fan of Prog Metal, this is a must have.
