Is this really Linkin Park?

Is this really Linkin Park? Well I guess I shouldn't be that surprised considering the moods and styles touched upon with 2007's 'Minutes To Midnight'. The band now bears little or no resemblance to the one that released the mega selling 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora' nu-metal classics at the turn of this century with such an impact, now surely alienating existing fans. The format of the last album has been developed(?) further but a myriad of musical complexities and an imbalance in song structures leaves me cold and struggling for any positives to cling to. The subtle atmospherics of most of the tracks are hindered by a plethora of industrialised keyboard textures and computer generated sound effects to the detriment of any artistic creativity the band is trying to achieve.

Lead vocalists Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda rarely get to stamp any authority on proceedings and their efforts are simply undermined by an alarmingly inferior set of songs that eventually come across as half-hearted ideas. Bennington proved on 'Minutes To Midnight' that his vocals suited the more laid back approach but now some of the rapping seems forced and out of context with the bulk of the material, 'Blackout' and 'When They Come For Me' suffering the most. Short periods of spoken word simply annoy and break the flow rather than enhance and the predominantly pedestrian musings deliver more of a hypnotic effect, leaving the listener longing for a guitar chord or two! The guitars are kept so low in the mix they appear non-existent meaning the anger and attitude that dominated the first two albums is lost without trace.

Aside from 'The Catalyst', which is as close as we come to the Linkin Park of old, songs meander and lose their way constantly, lacking any distinct identity. Album closer 'The Messenger', a melancholic acoustic piano/guitar based sermon, is left virtually unlistenable due to Bennington's unglorified vocal attack. The hard-core Linkin Park fanbase will be claiming a period of maturity or progress on the bands part but I can only report a practical use to 'A Thousand Suns' and that's as a new coaster for my wine glass as I listen to anything and everything else!
