Recommended for those with a disposition towards the style of Lynyrd Skynyrd and TAB.

Warren Haynes (guitar & vocals), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboard) and Jorgen Carlsson (bass) return with studio album number ten, a good twenty-two years after their self-titled debut. With The Allman Brothers now consigned to history, Gov't Mule is now the main focus and musical outlet for co-founder Haynes. The album recording started on US election day, so coincidently could be considered to be almost prophetic, given Trump being elected President. The album itself was recorded in Austin and New York, and was produced by Haynes with Gordie Johnson and Don Was.

The twelve songs on the album are a split between political observation and personal experiences, and are delivered in the band's indomitable style of Southern Rock, Blues, Funk, Jazz and Soul. 'Stone Cold Rage', the album's first single, is certainly full of political content, raising the topic of social unrest across the US. The track opens with a heavy riff and the raw emotion comes through very clearly throughout the song. The offerings on the rest of the album cross many different styles, with selections like 'Revolution Come... Revolution Go' being very Funky/Jazzy, whereas 'The Man I Want To Be' and 'Dreams & Songs' have a very Country feel to them.

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine For Melodic Rock Music

The Blues are covered with 'Drawn That Way', 'Easy Times' and 'Pressure Under Fire', while 'Sarah Surrender' sounds very commercial and could do well as a single release. 'Traveling Tune' contains some nice slide guitar work and could fit in easily to any TAB release. Album highlight, for me, is the aforementioned '...Rage' as it gets its message across by hitting you right between the eyes.

This wouldn't be an album for listening to in the car, but one that really needs to be played where there are no distractions; where you can take it easy and just concentrate on the music. 'Revolution Come... Revolution Go' is recommended for those with a disposition towards the style of Lynyrd Skynyrd and TAB.
