Another exciting release by one of metal's often overlooked bands.

David DeFeis and his metal comrades are back with another intelligent and complex album of sophisticated rock and metal. Yet this album like so many of their others takes many, many listens before a) you begin to understand what they are trying to achieve, and b) really get to love what they have done on 'The Black Light Bacchanalia'. Which I think is always the test of a great album, the way you have to continue to play, listen and digest what the band have recorded before making up your mind as to if or why you like what your listening to.

'The Black Light Bacchanalia' is another concept album by the band and finishes off some of the tales started on the 'Visions Of Eden' album, it is filled with stories about the insanity of life and the way it's joys, battles, heartaches and sorrows impact on your life. So as you can imagine with subjects as complex as these it does take a while for the words and music to sink in and make their point. Which I'm glad (if that's the right word) to say makes this a very hard CD to review. Hard because if you try to take the songs out of context or the order they are presented in, then they lose some of their strength and emotional power, which does them no good whatsoever. You have to listen to this album as a whole, the way it was meant to be heard, so as to get the best out of the music. And believe me when I say with music as good as this, that isn't much of a problem at all.

Also the way in which Virgin Steele have packaged this album is part of what makes it special. Of course there is the standard jewel case, but you can also get a special edition digi-pack with a bonus disc featuring David De Feis explaining what the story and songs on 'TBLB' are all about, plus you get another two bonus tracks to help round things off. And for you vinyl heads out there, there is a limited edition three disc vinyl album version with expanded artwork and other assorted extra goodies.

All in all this is another exciting release by one of metal's often overlooked bands, which I'm sure with this release will be rectified. Virgin Steele have returned with great songs great production and great musicianship, and an epic album they can be rightly proud of.
