An impressive and cohesive debut.

Blackwater Conspiracy are a new Irish band specializing in a no-frills, Retro-influenced brand of Classic Rock, but the men behind the project are certainly not newcomers to the music scene. Fronted by Phil Conalane on vocals, with Kie McMurray on bass, Brian Mallon on guitar, Kevin Brennan on keys and Fionn O'Hagain on drums, the guys used to be known as Million Dollar Reload who released 'A Sinners Saint' on Frontiers Record back in 2012.

After leaving Frontiers, the band issued a further album, 'As Real As It Gets', a year later on their own label Bulletproof Records, and it's through this channel that they have decided to release the BC debut record, a decision that gives them a chance to reinvent themselves. The group did this in dramatic fashion by actually performing a gig under the MDR moniker, and midway through the show announcing their new name and unveiling the new logo onstage.

With their own label offering no constraints, the musical shackles are off and the group is free to indulge in its influences, something that's proved to have worked very well. 'Waiting On Hollywood' opens with a piano introduction before the guitars kick in, then we're off and running. Conalane's voice is reminiscent of Bon Scott (no bad thing), and it's clear from the get-go that BC are invigorated and inspired. 'The Monday Club' is fun Bar-room Rock similar to the sort of music you'd get from The Quireboys, while the Blues-tinged 'Penny For Your Dirty Mind' is a standout.

There are high points aplenty, like the raucous '85 Rock Star' acting as the perfect counterpoint to the dreamy intro to 'Hanging Tree', which is awash with organ and jangly guitar lines before exploding into a thundering effort. The almost seven minute supercharged Rock 'n' Roll juggernaut 'Decadent Highway' is another track well worth your time.

The group will be appearing at festivals such as Download and the Ramblin' Man Fair, armed with ten strong songs that have been woven into an impressive and cohesive debut. They're doing everything right, including offering the record in digital, CD and even limited edition vinyl formats (which adds four bonus tracks that don't appear on the CD or digital version) which covers all the bases. You can never have too many bands that play good, solid Classic Rock, and Blackwater Conspiracy and their most entertaining debut are a welcome addition.
