Lynch Mob / Rock Goddess / Wild Lies - O2 Academy Islington, London (UK) - 12 November 2017

Opener Wild Lies are a bit of a mash-up. With some obvious Hair Metal influences, they are a bit rough around the edges and seem to be experimenting with a lot of different styles as if they are deciding what to play by a committee with diverse musical tastes. They, in fact, sound best when in Stoner Rock mode.

Rock Goddess are thoroughly enjoyable as always. 'More Than Rock 'N' Roll', the newish single, is the best song of the night and is performed with a freshness and passion we have come to expect from these girls. It also shows that they are still pulling it out of the hat song-writing and delivery wise. They also continue to look like amazing blonde bombshells. I'll have some of what they're having!

Lynch Mob have a great set-list. Maximum Metal and less funky than I think George Lynch's true tastes lie, it was probably compiled for their appearance at HRH to fit genre, but it is absolutely to my and the London's crowd's taste, including classics like 'She's Evil But She's Mine', 'Into The Fire', a great version of 'The Hunter' (sheer nostalgia) and some new material such as the great first track from their new album 'Main Offender'. Oni Logan, their singer, is ill and needs his red handkerchief often, but he sounds very good nevertheless, more than doing justice to the tracks Don Dokken used to sing; the red handkerchief also looks very Rock and Roll.

He has also developed immensely in stage craft across his time with Lynch, and he is now looking very much in control of his domain and a front-man from the old-school of Heavy Metal singers like Ronnie James Dio. Lynch is looking very understated in a baseball cap, but there is nothing understated about his playing; in my photos of the gig, his hand is often completely invisible, just missing, because he is playing so fast. He shows a wide variety of techniques, not just speed such as finger tapping, and even plays his guitar like a bass in 'Believers Of The Day'. He's also gets the moves in his hips, even if we can't see them quite as well as in the days when his pants were skin tight. Sean McNab is not short of showy moves either, with his bass above his head, looking happy and relaxed. The charismatic Jimmy D'anda on drums gets on with his job and makes it look easy. He does a super-fast solo, and with characteristic style, licks his stick for good measure.

It is all going so well. Unfortunately, after a great and grand version of 'Testify', Lynch's precious (apparently vintage) Marshall amp blows. He then announces that he couldn't play on without his tone and so that was the end of the show. The audience cannot believe it and refuse to move. Roadies then take the back off the amp, but to no avail. What an anti-climax to an otherwise amazing show! D'anda starts giving away his equipment to the front row, but there is no riot, just sad resignation from the crowd. Apparently, the support band offered a spare amp as Lynch did not have one, but he would not play without his own equipment. He explained that he "is" his tone and I understand that he did not want to mess with his brand and reputation. Also, he was obviously emotionally gutted. Some of the old Marshall's can fetch £100,000 and are irreplaceable. He has been criticised for not carrying on, but since this was sprung on him and he was obviously so upset, describing it as his worst nightmare, although I was gutted, I understood. We only missed four songs, but one of them was of course 'Wicked Sensation'. A memorable gig for some of the right, but also one big wrong and sad reason.
