Leprous / Agent Fresco / Alithia / Astrosaur - Le Metronum, Toulouse (France) - 11 November 2017

Thanks to a recent interview with Anneke Van Giersbergen, I got to know Leprous. She was explaining that today, in order to be successful as a young Metal band, you have to be technically, musically and vocally excellent and really proactive. Leprous completely fits with this description and they blew me away at this gig in Toulouse.

Three support acts went on stage beforehand; Astrosaur (Instrumental Progressive Metal), Alithia (I'd say Atmospheric Metal) and Agent Fresco (Rock). All of them were pretty talented, and it was a pleasure to see them performing live. If I had to give a special mention, it'd be for Alithia; this Australian band is definitely worth listening to thanks to a particularly universal use of music instruments and the talented members behind them. I hope I'll have the chance to see them performing again and eventually to cover their work through Rocktopia.

As for the main act, Leprous played fourteen songs that mostly covered their two albums, but they especially focused on their last one – 'Malina' – which they were promoting on this tour. The set-list changes frequently over the dates so I didn't know what to expect, but my expectations were fulfilled with the show being very deep, very dark and highly Progressive. Starting quietly with 'Bonneville' and 'Stuck', the audience themselves dived into the gig with the arrival of 'Foe' and 'The Flood'. The audience were allowed a bit of time to breathe in between, with a slow and appreciable melody, before the aggressive and dynamic rhythm started up again. This style of polar opposites is particularly noticeable on some songs such as 'Rewind', 'Slave' and 'The Price'.

Einar Solberg, the lead singer, has an impressive voice, both low and very high, that he handles perfectly. He truly brings emotion and power to the songs with a charisma that nobody can deny. The whole band was particularly well organized around the stage and they were orchestrated by precise lighting effects. Thanks to all of this, I was totally absorbed by Leprous' performance.

It was an absolute pleasure to discover this Norwegian band on the live stage. I learned, thanks to people present, that Leprous played for Devin Townsend last year and now I have two big regrets; not having seen them earlier but also now not having seen the Devin Townsend Project as well! In any case, this Progressive Metal world sounds even more interesting to me, thanks to such artists, and I just want to keep discovering them, thanks to all this talent and energy on stage. I definitely recommend to seeing Leprous performing on stage if you have the chance to; don't hesitate and allow yourself to be impressed as much as I have been!
