Kobra And The Lotus / Brutai / Aonia / Air Drawn Dagger - Corporation, Sheffield (UK) - 02 December 2017

After being at concerts for the previous four Saturdays, plus two mid-week events during that time, I was looking forward to a Saturday night in with my feet up, 'Dad's Army' and 'Match Of The Day'. I then got a call asking if I would check out Kobra And The Lotus – oh well!

Air Drawn Dagger Live

On arrival, not only did I find out that the Corporation had yet another stage that I hadn't seen before, but I also discovered that there were four bands on the bill. Tonight's event started with Air Drawn Dagger, a Sheffield band fronted by Maisie Manterfield who immediately reminded me of Debbie Harry, mainly because she was bright blonde but also because she had a bit of the attitude. They played an energetic set of music that had bits of everything in, where she literally threw herself all over the stage, (what bit there was of it), and half off the stage, before she ended up rolling around the floor in the middle of the crowd; I hope she's got a good washing machine.

Aonia Live

Second up was Aonia who I'd seen here just a fortnight earlier and who had impressed me on that occasion. Now I knew what they were about, I found myself even more impressed. There are seven in the band, which made things a little cramped on the small stage, but they handled it well and attempt to put a bit of visual in there with smoke and lights, although I am not sure the bubble machine really worked in what looks like a Goth setting. The combination of the two Operatic vocalists, namely Mellissa Adams and Joanne Robinson, worked really well, and anyone who likes Nightwish and Tarja should really check them out.

Brutai were the touring support for Kobra And The Lotus on this tour and I had read that they played Progressive Metal, so my mind thought Devin Townsend and Threshold, but so far, I can't remember or think of a Prog Metal band that sounds like another. They were okay with some nice guitar work, but one of the guitarists had the misfortune of a broken string and had to leave the stage for a while to sort it which didn't help. I also think they were a little misplaced, being the only band tonight without female vocals.

Brutai Live

It was then time for Kobra And The Lotus who I knew absolutely nothing about. What I did learn – very quickly – was that Kobra Paige can sing, and I also noticed that the crowd had swelled noticeably by the time they came on (there was even someone there from Brazil!).

Kobra And The Lotus Sheffield Live 2

I didn't know any of the material, apart from the snippet of Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song', but it was strong with memorable choruses and it was obvious that the band really enjoyed what they were doing, and I would imagine if I was to cover them again, I would appreciate it even more.

Kobra And The Lotus Sheffield Live 3

I would also be interested to see how they perform on a bigger stage. A lot of the crowd tonight sang along, obviously familiar with the songs, and they left more than happy. I actually heard later that Kobra Paige had been unwell all day, so hats off to her for putting on such a good performance under those circumstances.
