Dogs D'Amour / Main Grains / Dust Coda - The Lounge 666, London (UK) - 08 December 2017

To my (perhaps) uneducated eye Dust Coda look like a bunch of builders, but they play some fairly decent Hard Rock with a hit of Boogie/Swing, not unlike AC/DC at times. Their vocalist has a decent voice when he rocks out, although I am not sure about his Geddy Lee style Falsetto.

Main Grains (new project of Danny McCormack of The Wildhearts and the Yo-Yos) are melodic yet thrashy Rock 'n' Roll, with some Ramones like overtones and also a bit like The Misfits (at times) in terms of sound. A cover of 'Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones shows the period this band are coming from. They are not above having a laugh when the drummer with a Mohawk gets cramp and when you're "in love with the Rock 'n' Roll world" no wonder they're still at it, despite any battle scars.

Dogs D-Amour Live 2

Dogs D'Amour launch straight into the classics with 'Billy Two Rivers', 'Fireworks Girl' and 'Bullet Proof Poet'. The audience know and love the songs, but with Tyla J. Pallas (as he is now known) being the only original member here tonight, the sound is discernibly different. However, anyone here who's a fan will know about Pallas's much publicised bust up with the rest of the original members, and the fact that Pallas has no trouble getting the audience to sing along to 'Heroine' as the new backing members cannot be much of a surprise.

There's still a dandy swagger to proceedings as Pallas treats everyone to some Rock 'n' Roll style guitar. He also looks every inch the old rogue with his stylish tattoos, fox and moon pins and watch chain with charms dangling from his waistcoat. 'I Don't Want You To Go' gets people dancing down at the front and the energy is up while the sound seems to have improved from a bit of a dodgy start. There's a bit of an energy dip in the middle where the band play some Pallas solo material, which, although I think the songs are every bit as good as the Dogs D'Amour offerings, are clearly less well known by the crowd and the band's antenna picks up on this.

Dogs D-Amour Live 1

Pallas, indeed a wily old fox, gets a grip of the gig like a serpent and with quick derring-do wrestles things back to where they should be with some faster, more Rockabilly energy and kneeling down at the front for a more visual spectacle while doing some old Blues stuff for variety sound-wise. Although his new axe-man struggles with the guitar on 'Wait Till I'm Dead', it's much better on 'Drunk Like Me', and when we roll into the classics 'Last Bandit' and 'Errol Flynn', Pallas is onto a winner with a crowd that are already now on board. With 'Satellite Kid', the crowd lift the roof off with their response and it is clear that although it was not a foregone conclusion, the gig has been a great success overall. The choice of 'Gypsy Blood' as an encore is a strange one, although it was missing earlier in the set, and I wonder if it was the only remaining song his latest line-up knew? In any event, by this point – although he is never an easy conquest – Pallas has given the crowd what they want and it's smiles all round.
