Don't be shy in approaching something that's not comfortable to listen to because music like this can reveal itself as a good training for thoughts.

From Portland, Oregon, this band just breaks into the airwaves of our present without warning, presenting a sound that seems to belong to another time/space dimension. Although this isn't their first confrontation with the world, 'Memory Of The World' being their sophomore release following their debut 'Heavy Habitat' from 2005, this trio, featuring RFK Heise, Palmer Cloud and Matt Wiles, surely won't let you down. However, please don't think you will digest this album easily... because you won't.

Last Giant sound undoubtedly vintage (and that doesn't mean strictly seventies) but their arrangements and overall musical proposal are pretty much intellectual, intrigued, sophisticated and fickle, even though just few songs overrun the four minute mark. There's a strange ability displayed by these guys and that is of sounding modern, even slightly Pop sometimes ('Diamond Decade', 'Drastic Plastic'), so much that the earliest and most psychopathic Cheap Trick came to my mind throughout this listening trip, yet without losing their Neo-Psychedelic, Retro-Progressive and, sometimes, Doomy approach ('The Comedian', 'Inventory').

I would even liken 'In The Calm' to being "Dream Pop"; it floats in the air like a Psychedelic hot-air balloon that's been battered and bruised by an electric storm However, the lyrics definitely come across as being attached to the earth. For instance, 'Saint Paul' refers to a town in Minnesota where the death of Philando Castile occurred last year, while 'Living In Photographs' launches a poignant criticism to nowadays humanity's contortion in its own media/virtuality abuse.

The stentorian vocals – something in between Robin Zander and Ozzy Osbourne – perfectly match the melodic state of the instrumental and thoughtful confusion in which these songs wrap you in, with that sense of wit and sharpness that makes the whole album a perfect choice for those days when you feel light-hearted sarcasm is the only form of entertainment that can save you from the misery of this world. Don't be shy in approaching something that's not comfortable to listen to because music like this can reveal itself as a good training for thoughts.
